Engine Ticking :(

My engine has started ticking, and I'm worried it might be serious.

On boxing day I checked it all over, topped up the oil, then drove the 200 miles up to Chesterfield to visit my Dad. A couple of days later, I drove all the way back. No problems.

Parked up, unpacked, had a cup of tea, then got back in the car... ticking.

The cambelts and everything were done back in July, so hopefully it's not that.

Any ideas? I don't have a clue.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Did the Variator get changed on the belt service. This makes a ticking noise when it is on its way out, i would advise always changing this on a belt service even if not noisy at the time.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

unlikely to be the variator if its a constant ticking...a knackered variator usually rears its ugly head on startup when it sounds like a diesel for a couple of seconds...

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Check the sparkplugs are tight. If one hasn't been tightened correctly or has come loose it can tick.
I have had this problem before, and no it wasn't me that fitted the plugs..

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Could it be a sticking lifter? A compression check should tell you if its a valve problem.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Belt ticking is a different frequency from lifters or tappets, which I didn't think were hydraulic?? Or am I that ignorant?

Re: Engine Ticking :(

It's a Cup? - so no variator then.

How loud is it, does it change in time with engine revs? does it appear to be coming from a particular area?

Injectors can tick quite loudly.

Paul.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

can you identify the area where the tick comes from at least?
Is it engine speed related?

Haven't had a chance to get on here for a few days but... bingo.

After starting the thread I got a moment to stick my head under the bonnet, and decided to check the oil... bone dry!

Filled her back up and all is fine, however, it would appear that I've got an oil leak just in front of the driver's side front wheel. There's a patch in the garage, and oil spots leading up to it. I've got to book her in to have her checked out, hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

With a TS engine I'd be worried, but the V6 might be more resiliant to being run low.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

If the car runs low on oil then, as Gary says, it could spell the end of a 16v twinspark engine.
THe V6 is more robust but with any car low on oil there is a risk of serious engine damage if driving hard, especially cornering hard where the oil pick up can suck up air and feed it into the crank shells instead of oil........

Re: Engine Ticking :(

When I started her up and heard the ticking I only drove her a mile or so, very gingerly. I've got to phone my mechanic tonight to see when he can come and have a look.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

I hate to be a Kill joy but if your engine has been run low on oil to the point it is making noises then IMO terminal damage will have occured.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Well, I'm not too sure, some engines can tolerate such abuse and be okay, so long as its only the tappets that tick and not anything else...

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Tappetrs can tick with low oil levels so cross everything, oil leak may require further inspection tho. Could be cam or crank case seals?

When I got my buddy to have a listen, the first thing he said was 'tappets' at first I thought he literally meant tap it

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Could it be something as simple as an exhaust gasket?

It will tick lightly in that case... (hope it is!)

No, Jim's already said it was low on oil...

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Righto, took the car in and apparently the oil cooler pipe has corroded and fractured. My guy said he wouldn't want to have a go at it as he's not an Alfa specialist.

Phoned AforAlfa and Alfaworkshop for an idea for quotes, both great guys, and I'm looking at a few hundred quid. (Don't tell the missus as I said the car wouldn't need any work after I bought it).

So now I'm looking around for an Alfa garage in Croydon that can do the job.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

We would always want to look at the problem before quoting or diagnosing the problem.

If it had fractured pipes it would be losing oil in big puddles under the car, sounds to me as though you need to have someone knowledgeable / competent regarding Alfa’s look at the car, I am not saying AforAlfa or Alfaworkshop are wrong as I know they are both very good but they have not had the opportunity to see the problem.

Re: Engine Ticking :(

Well, mine was making a ticking noise, mechanic thought it was the variator... I filled her up fully with some good oil and bingo, noise stopped. There have been no oil puddles, no performance issues or anything. So, hopefully all is fine. I've driven well over 600 miles since and nothing has happened (except my power steering fluid drained too and started a whirring noise, topped up today so hopefully that solves the problem.)
