BMW e46 M3

Third generation M3 packing a 3.2 straight 6 and 340bhp. A performance benchmark for many years

Is it cool?

Yes i think it is cool, like Gaz said a benchmark for others, 340bhp through the rear wheels, a proper driving machine

Great car, not even remotely cool. Like its predecessor, it wall fall into the hands of the wrong sort of people very soon if it hasn't already. I think it will age better than the E36 and in another 10 years the answer might be different.

Mechanically it's a very good car.

It is a very uncool car. The only people that I see driving them are either "yuppie businessman" types or steroid-pumped hulks. Usually with some ridiculous thing hanging from the rear-view mirror as well.

Great car. I considered one once. Then I realised I look like a tool already and could ill afford the anti-kudos.

Basically, the sort of person who might come up to you and say "nice car"......I couldn't live with that sort of association.

UNCOOL

Exactly. You said it exactly right!

In my Alfa, most of the people who talk to me about the car are really stylish (much more so than me ) or sincere old guys or wide-eyed polite children. Occasionally an owner of a lightly-modded hot hatch or something will show interest.
BMW drivers just ignore the Alfa. Especially after I've shown them some dust.

Not in the slightest. The original E30 is cool now. I'm not sure this one ever could be. Possibly in 15 years but even then, I struggle with the image of moderately well off businessmen in their 50's wearing back to front baseball caps as they seek to recapture their past by doing doughnuts in Asda car park and maybe the odd drive by shooting for fun.

+ They go well
- Chavvy/no-mark/council estate/drug dealer image has to be the deal breaker.

As a machine they are great... Fast, well engineered and they handle very well.

But they are never cool. In fact I think that they have a bit of a council estate image these days.

The E39 M5 however is certainly a cool car.

Office Chair.

I wouldn't mind a go of one. Not owning one though. I think in time they will become cool and little rarer.

I would own one. Must be the hard top though as the soft top is uncool.

Nope. Teutonic engineering brilliance that excites the mind but fails to reach the heart.

sadly, it's a bit kebab shop at the moment.

a fine car, and will be admired for being so in ten years time. Until then, it's still got to drop a bit further down the car food chain before the knuckle-draggers have moved on to something else and its social turnaround starts. I am rather fond of them though.
