Oldsmobile Toronado

A luxurious US car from the late 60s/early 70’s, oozes character coupled with the traditional US massive engines… but is it cool?

That'd get you into the Custom Car Club, so yes I'd take one of those along.:

Old bells clang on about chain drive transmissions, or has my old memory gone completely haywire?

Yes, they did use chain drive to allow the gearbox to be mounted alongside the engine.

Definitely sub-zero, but the original 1966-67 front end was much better looking than the 1968 facelift shown in the pictures.

Nah... Normally like old American cars but this isn't doing anything for me... Nor the 66 pre facelift, looks ugly

  • Heavy-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission (named THM425 in FWD form)
  • Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor
  • Spherical shaped exhaust-manifold flange gaskets, which provided freedom of movement in the exhaust system and prevented leaks
  • "Draft-Free" ventilation system, which reduced wind noise considerably by eliminating conventional front-door vent windows

Sub-zero. It's fabulous. Jay Leno has one that isn't FWD. His has over 1000 bhp and looks stock.

This is the third time I've come back. I still not sure but feel I'm instinctively going away from the pack. Once you get past the grille and first yard of bonnet it's a bit "meh".

SiE proclaiming a leaky old carb and 3 speed transmission in a fwd car doesn't help it at all.

Hideous, an AMC pacer in waiting. Add the 3 speed lady licence feature to ensure total disinterest.

This one's a fence. I'm not voting because I think because it was what it was for the day it is cool but then I look at it.
Lastly and most important. I don't think generally people will look and think cool, they'll probably think.. tool.

I've come back (again) and I still can't quite decide. On balance I think it's a bit uncool.

+ It's an interesting, rare old yank with 400bhp.
- It's a bit of a munter and its a 400bhp yank with FWD.

I admit, I haven't drove one (who has?) but 400bhp with FWD sounds like a great deal of bonkers to me when until recently we were told that 230bhp is about the maximum FWD could deal safely with without crazy electronic stuff.

Deserves a round of applause I think (of a sort...)

Here is an old review

Much nicer but not what was polled. It looks like it's apeing the lovely Riviera a bit.
