E28 bmw m5

While Frankie was suggesting we all relax and not do it, BMW were previewing the first ever BMW M5 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. At launch, the E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon car in the world.

Hand-built with a tuned 282bhp 3.5 litre straight six (originally designed for the M1). Some of you will recall that this came at a time when a Ferrari 328 only mustered 270 horses. It could do 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds. And 0-100mph in 15. Magnificent.

If there was an issue at the time, when yuppies were flashing the cash all over the City, maybe then it was a little too understated. If you didn't get the sleeper status then it wasn't going to work for you. Maybe you looked at the price (over £31k - pretty much Fezza money) and wondered if it could really be worth £12 more than the 535i (regardless of the six throttle butterflies).

I put it to you that the BMW racism is misguided. They make good cars. They make bad cars.

This is a marvellous car.

Cool. Looks like a nice subdued saloon, goes like the clappers.

On my too ten list (and possibly top 5).

Blinkered? Maybe I have an Italian car bias because the M5 I prefer out of those above is the red one with the tan interior.

I don't think this M5 has an automatic image problem like many BMWs. Its styling is stereotypical German executive saloon - almost handsome but a bit cold, aggressive and serious. Maybe that's why red helps.
I decided to give it cool but it's borderline - the owner and their reasons for owning it could easily affect the coolness verdict.

Guy in the NHS hospital I worked at let me have a drive of his,(I think that's what it was,... in line six with plastic body bits that were a shade of pink iirc?) auto box, which really was a flier.

This was about the time I bought the Lancia 16v turbo I think?

Cool? Of course it's cool. It was the first 'proper' high performance saloon car. The definitive 'Q' car

Is that the one Joss has got? If so uncool, if not 'spose it's OK.

Cool..

I smoked around in a 535i e28 (chrome bumpers, manual) for a year or so back in the mid 90s until it got stolen.

Cool. Loved the styling of late 70s/80s beemers. Saying that though, the yanks know how to ruin the look of a car. Look at the state of the fenders on the black one

Joss' is an E12 M535i not an E28 M5 I think (but still a very nice car). The M535i (in both E12 and E28 flavours) used the standard 3.5l six pot from a 6/735 rather than the M88 engine that first saw the light of day in the M1. The M535i had a body kit whereas the M5 only had a slightly deeper front splitter.

Sub zero. Wish my E12 had got the twink head as it would have meant 60 more poneys as standard.

Naff off Keithy.

So, what you are saying is Joss got the wrong, inferior, less collectable car

I admit, I went through that stage with them a few years ago. Personally, I think they've come out the other side now.

The sober looks are a big part of its appeal. It was 911 turbo quick in its day but people didn't key it or gob on it in car parks.
