Alfa Romeo Giulietta

I used to pore over my Observer Book of Automobiles and overly linger over the Alfetta and Giulietta pages. I'm not sure why, with hindsight.

Technically it didn't move anything on at all. Launched in 1977, it was based on Alfetta underpinnings. It did have unusually boxy, almost hatchbacky styling, but it certainly wasn't pretty. It was a 3 box saloon, with no body variants.

Engines were the usual powerful and effective Alfa units with even the base 1.3 giving over 90bhp (I think this was one of the attractions to a teenager - Ford were happy clunking out pushrods with 60bhp in Sierras). The 1962cc enging topped the range with 130bhp, as per in the Alfetta and GTV.

Turbos appeared in the margins with a 170bhp TurboDelta plumbing job, and a turbo diesel making a brief appearance, though not in the UK as far as I recall.

So, you can imagine the reviews.....wonderfully balanced handling, excellent engines, but not with my money when I can get a nice 3 series.

I wanted to say uncool, but I was swung by the concept of running one in 2015 and thought that would be a quite cool thing to do. I haven't got used to the meh button yet.

Office Chair.

I probably don't really like it myself but I do think to be seen in one as such is rather cool.

Just can't get on with that square boxy look. Works on the 75, but not on this one for me.

Uncool. Ugly.

Maybe it's time has yet to come, but it has yet to be.

Even though it has an Alfa badge and would probably be fun to hoon around in, I've gotta admit it's uncool by virtue of being ugly.

Sub Zero.

Guess I've got to say that since I have one.

Had one in dysentry beige with steel wheels like the one above years ago. Looked like crap but drove wonderfully!

The good old days of function over style.

Picture of mine below. Had it out at the weekend. Always driven like it should be, sideways at every oppertunity!

My dad had the Alfetta () but always wished he had a Giulietta ()

The kick-up boot "spoiler" is what does it for me.

The car that got me into alfao - my cousin in Italy had a wee 1.3 which was just lovely. Not supercool yet, but it's time will come

my dad had one of these, a 1982 one. i quite liked it at the time, nice drive, interesting inside. he did have problems with it over the 3 or 4 years he had it. it was resprayed twice due to rust, on a drive to norfolk in the rain the wiper motor burned out - well, the wipers had been going for an hour or so, what d'ya expect??
cool or not? i'll say not, just obsolete.

Voted cool simply because of the badge it wears. I had the opportunity to buy one and then opted for a 75. Still is a fun little thing to chuck about.

cool! look at every mid range saloon after it - low nose, rising waist line, high boot; just like the then controversial Giulietta. It set the template. Ugly at launch, looks fab today

Forgotten, fairly hideous, but unarguably cool
