cool!

Unlike the prosaic duties carried out by an MPV, school run car or exec limo, it has that relaxed look of a car living a charmed life, shuttling elegantly from one's château to one's Alpine retreat, while taking in the Côte d'Azur in between. It's got a better lifestyle than I have!

The last pic is the only flattering angle and shade. How do you keep contriving to do that Steve?

Anyway, palette notwithstanding, I agree it is and was cool. Love both your and Scudetto's descriptions and can't improve on them.

My mates dad had a Beta saloon. Compared to my dads Cortina (or Corsair at the time) it seemed like a spaceship.

Correction - the HPE never came with the little 1300 engine. It used only the 1600cc and 2000cc versions of the Fiat twin cam, four cylinder. Initially in carb form, then injection, and finally supercharged 2 litre.

I think the 1.6 had about 99bhp, the 2.0 aroundabouts 115-118bhp. The VX mebbes in the 130s but with good torque figures and absolutely no turbo lag which was a pita in many cars at the time.

Not about absolute top speed - more about dainty, elegant swift motoring.

Actually, looking at those pictures, from some angles it bears a strong resemblence to the Alfa 33, never really thought that before TBH......

This is a car I want to like. It's odd (to me) looks just won't let me say it's cool. So it has to be Meh.

Funny, I think the rear 3/4 is its best view.

The wheels look small but so does everything of that vintage.

i think I'd very much like to see one properly sorted. By that I mean dropped appropriately - not daft like like that Keithboy likes like. Thema Turbo engine. Nice suspension. Bodywork simplified. Remove all tat.

I can't see how this is anything other than cool. It just is.

An Integrale 16v head goes straight on the block I believe. However, I'm thinking Beta HPE 8.32.

16v head won't fit as the engine's turned through 180 degrees in the Delta/Themas, etc.

Often thought of doing a 16v turbo though.

Oh, and cool!

Alfa 156 SW

“HPE” is short for “High Performance Estate”

At the time, when Lancia ruled the Rally word with the Fulvia, Stratos HF and later the Delta Integrale, I think everything with a Lancia badge on seemed rather cool.

I think the Beta HPE was the 156 /159 SW of its time, but I didn’t much like the Lancia Beta Berlina nor the Beta Coupé.

If memory serves, a Lancia Beta Coupe survived Clarkson’s abuse all across Botswana in a Top Gear Africa edition, - almost as well as May’s much newer Merc. did.

I knew a guy, who traded in his Alfetta GTV for a Lancia HPE in order to bring the pram for his oldest son. I never saw any pram inside that car, though, but Senior even drove the same Lancia HPE to both his sons' graduations.

Cool for me.
