Saab 900 Turbo

The 900 was launched in 1978 and immediately looked like nothing else on the market. Almost determinedly different, and not always for straightforward or logical reasoning, the Saab was engineered almost like nothing else available at the time too.

Initially with 143bhp, the Turbo was a bit of a flyer from the outset - and was one of the pacesetters in terms of using the technology. In '84 the 16V engine was released, providing 175bhp. We started seeing the Aero bodykit and wheels from around this time. Very tuneable, these engines.

Aerodynamic. Mooseproof. Powerful and fast. Practical. Handsome. Distinctive. Esoteric.

Nice.

Suffered a bit in the 80s from yuppies
looking for an alternative but still managed
to keep it's cool.

A vauxhall chav in drag! Having owned a few 900's in my time i can say they are a comfortable mile munching car but, take it anywhere near twisty B roads and its a pig with all the handling charachteristics of a barge.

There was no GM in the 900 until the one after the three door in the picture.

Did you draft Michael Owen in to almost certainly ghost the copy?

Anyway, the 900 is almost just about cool.

Yes i am aware, the larger body was designed for US Mkt and ruined the gem of a chassis that sits below that car. Hence, why i say the begining of the US influence-GM-Vauxhall nose heavy was seen as the begining of GM influence upon Saab.

It was pure Saab. I had a silver 900S 16v Turbo. Man that car was awsome. You couldn't here the engine until the rev limiter! So refined, it was bolted to the road with the LSD. On black ice you couldn't walk on it would drive on easily. It had a type of passive rear steer that was nice and a massive boot for a sub and your luggage. A cool car if it had the aero treatment, a granddad mobil in standard trim I think.

These are my favourite Saabs and the 2-door sporty versions are easily cool. One of the only vehicles to be able to pull off a two-tone paint job and tri-spoke wheels at the same time.

Never liked the 900 personally.

The 9000 was a much better looking car IMO.

I'm not sure that helps. I'm reading through the John Gardner Bond books at the moment, and they're bloody awful.

Generally they look crap. Whether it's a collective opinion or not I can't say. Saab's seem to work however.

What about the triple spoke Mito alloys ?
Does that make it right?
