Nope, I probably should say it's cool as most petrolheads would.

It's cool. Much more grown up than most hot hatches. Doesn't look dated despite being a 30-odd year old design. If I was going to buy an 80s car, it would be this.

They drove brilliantly too.

I think these are Uncool.

Blackbird Leys image, a magnet for idiots, and they are not all that great to drive.

It's not cool, but I know you like them kb. No comment - that doesn't make it uncool....well maybe a bit. It looks pretty good in the picture as a spotless, unmolested original and it is almost cool on that basis. Most weren't, still aren't and therein lies part of the problem with its image. Part Chav, part Head Boy depending on their owners. Golfs have always been a bit "smug" too and to be honest I'm not sure being the "most grown up" hot hatch helps make it anything but uncool.

i had two, and thought they were great to drive:

red mk2 big bumper GTI bought used with 60k: went like a bomb
white mk 2 big bumper GTI bought used with 20k; utterly gutless until it clocked up 35k

too many good memories of them (well, bar an in car fire in the white one) to think they're anything but cool

It was followed by the mk3 which was famously complacent .
