VW Golf Mk1

It didn't invent the hatchback.

It didn't really invent the hot hatch.

But it was the best?

Was it cool? Is it cool?

not with those ghastly wheels Steve, no

it's a significant part of auto history and popular culture over the last 40 years, for sure.

Even if it wasn't, those crisp, neat lines make it cool.

you know something marvellous and sad?

it was all the car most people ever need and it was less than 150 inches long.

The current Fiesta is as long as the Mk3 'Erika' Escort.

given the advances in safety and packaging since its launch, there must be a way to make a mk1 Golf roomy and safe.

it is called the VW Up?

My first ever car back in 1993 was a MK1 Golf xmas eve i bought mine, one bolt & you could slide the seats out for new ones.
Everything was so simple to repair.

Little known fact Giorgetto giugaro was the designer ironically like the car i own now.

You can't run D90s and Land Rover discovery ride height on a Mk1. Remember kids, if it ain't rubbin, it ain't Dubbin.

I don't think they're funky enough to compensate for their cheap, utilitarian German-ness. Even if the mk1 Golf GTi was a significant car, the mk1 range as a whole doesn't do enough to make it into 'cool'.
The vast majority of modified ones look awful also.

The germanness must come from VW insisting Giugiaro put round headlights on it as a cost cutting measure when he designed it in Moncalieri. He later did the rectangular ones he wanted , on the Lancia Delta. Oh , and the cheaper versions of the Scirocco .

It should be cool because its a motoring milestone. But then i think, how many years worth of blinkered Autocar based benchmarking and predictability has it spawned. Not to mention the cult following it has created - probably justifiable, certainly full of idiots.

I think basically, the car itself if left alone is probably just about cool. But the people make it very uncool

Agreed. Just a dull bloody hatchback. This one shown is particularly dull
