One of the few japanese cars i would consider buying with actual money
One of the few non-hideous, sporty cars which I would class as seriously uncool.
They're hard to defend because their supposed strength is performance, but they're only good in relative terms (relative to hotted-up FWD hatchbacks with small, naturally-aspirated mass production engines). They also achieve their strength in nerdy ways:
"My engine's got a really high specific power output for a road car, because it's factory blueprinted and it's got VTEC, but not the economy VTEC! It can rev higher than comparable engines!"
It's therefore difficult to make a case for a Type R while sounding cool and without having to make excuses.
For many reasons, Type Rs (and the standard model Integras) are regularly subjected to awful boyracer / Chav cosmetic modifications. For a time, they were also the default boring cop-out car with which to enter amateur motorsport events, requiring no effort or originality on the part of the entrant.
No matter what your budget though, if you wanted to go as fast as possible for the money, you wouldn't buy a Type R. And given that they have a bad image and no other appeal that I can see, they get seriously uncool.
