Uncool, a bodged design, badly built, second only to the X Type as the worst Jaguar.

Ian Ogilvy's Saint was never that cool, hence pushing this car into the uncool area.

I think it has aged really well and thing ragtop is a thing of beauty. I had a toy white one. It comes with a V12. Cool.

Rumour has it that John Egan commented when he first saw the XJ-S:"it looks like a tarted-up Ford Capri".

I want to give it better than 'cool', but unfortunately it comes with a 3-speed auto and a V12 that doesn't make any noise.

Seriously uncool.

Was meant to follow on from the e-type, but was fatter and much uglier. It was also built (mostly badly) during the bad old days of BL/Jaguar and was kept in production for far too long.

Jags are supposed to look challenging when launched.....and then 5-10 yrs later everyone goes ............aw yeah....it's brilliant.
THAT is the XJS in a nutshell.

Would disagree with Jags looking challenging when launched, i'd say beautifully elegant, XK120, Mark 2, E Type, XJ6/12, XK8. The XJS was a bodge up, the flying buttresses are there because it started life as a proper mid-engined sportscars but that got stopped so they had to stretch the front to fit the engine in.
To me it looks like something designed and built specifically for fat Americans.

Love the XJ-S. That BRG colour suits it so well. Prefer the slightly later ones with the revised back end light treatment.

I drove one a few years back and it was a real event. Not that fast, not that good visibility, didn't go round corners fantastically, BUT, that long bonnet, that snug cockpit, the rear view mirror view, the sound, the ride...

Love it. Not much around at the time like it - and nothing since. We should be proud of it - not embarrassed by it!

A fat American (or a fat person from any country for that matter) would not really fit in one.

I have to agree. I really, truly didn't like them at all for many years (and still would never see myself in one) completely buying in to many of the negative views about its size and performance, then the tatty aged but now cheap ones appealing to a certain kind of middle aged poseur all just reinforced that thoroughly uncool aspect.

However, only in the last 5-10 years, as you start to see lovely, cherished versions cruising sedately along do you start to appreciate they really do have something about them. They've almost come of age with the passing of years suggesting the looks were originally more advanced than a lot of the market was ready for at the time.

It just creeps into cool for me. Make it a convertible in deep metallic burgundy or dark BRG, place it under an azure sky, bright sun and in some impossibly chic Riviera setting and I'd be hard pushed not to say it's actually very cool.

cool for me.

time has certainly helped their appeal flourish in my eyes.

was a passenger in a black 5.0 V12 in 1988 traveling all the way from Cheshire back to (then) home in Maidenhead. Great ride, quiet, air con.

looks work for me now - it took 30 years though!

Only the XJS looked more challenging as it got older.
