What could actually be less cool than a French car powered by a US build V8 ?
I think it is also seriously uncool, that Mercedes-Benz seems to have been able to copy of lines of the front silhouette of The Facel-Vega, e.g. in the hideous 1960’es dictator container the M.-B. 600 “Grosser”
On the other hand the Facel-Vega HK500 actually did have a lot of very cool design features. E.g. did the French obviously copy the “scudetto” - the front grill area – of the Alfa 1900 (Berlina) from 1950-59.
As I recall from my older brothers’ childhood car books the Facel-Vega was one of the most expensive cars you could get your hands on. As I remember it, however, the company went bankrupt when they tried to take on Alfa Romeo in making sporty 4-cylinder saloon cars, replacing the Chrysler-V8s with their own flawed 4-cylinder engines. Of cause the handling of a Facel-Vega would be no match for Alfa Romeo, but since the French engines also wouldn’t last the Facel-Vega quality image was gone forever.
The “gossip columns” on the Internet seem to nail the coffin of “seriously uncool” claiming that he Facel-Vega owners were people like Pablo Picasso, King Hassan II of Morocco, The Shah of Iran, The President of Mexico, The Saudi Royal family, Fred Astaire, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Joan Collins, Ringo Starr, Tony Curtis, Danny Kaye, Anthony Quinn, Stirling Moss, etc…
OK, it is actually rather cool, that Sir Stirling Moss had one...
From an old Top Gear-clip on You Tube, it is easy to see, that the Facel-Vega HK500 handles worse than an overloaded fishing trawler stuck in a hurricane.
However, this you-tube-clip also reveals the details of a very fast and rather unique type of vehicle, - especially having in mind that the Facel-Vega was from the time when most of Western Europe was overrun by Harry Potter-type Ford Anglias :
Main rule : if you have to think about it the car is uncool, but in this case I have to say “cool” .
