Absolutely sub-zero. Amazing 60s styling, big V8, Ringo Starr had one.

I only voted sub-zero because there isn't a higher category! One of my all-time favourite cars - simultaneously brutal & elegant.

Just been checking prices so I know how much of my lottery win to set aside. Apparently, Ringo's Facel Vega II sold for £337,500 in 2013.

Which makes this restored HK500 look like a snip at $149,900.

The rusty pic doesn't detract all that much. Nor does the naff Ringo Starr connection which in itself is a major factor in its ability to still be cool. Sub zero.

I'll vote 'uncool' on their behalf. I see this as the type of thing that sits in collections and totters to classic car shows once in a while, and I'm indifferent about its styling. Because nobody (except uncool classic car people) knows what it is, it has to be that much better to immediately win people over. I think that compared to the best designs of its era, it's a bit more awkward / less elegant / less attractive. The doors look all wrong, for example, like they were borrowed off a four-door version and/or like they suffered when the designer decided to move the windscreen back to make the bonnet look longer. The steel wheels look bad, but you couldn't change them because classic car. Etc.

The pictures were chosen quite deliberately.

It's only an opinion but in concept and execution these things possess more charisma, style, cool, class and all round balloons than most stuff you will ever see on the road.

I think I'd probably prefer one with a few light modifications in the hotrod direction. Not much, but some wider wheels that filled the guards better than those steelies, some rally lights that weren't there from the factory (to upset the worst of the classic car show people), maybe lower it marginally... and a repaint it if it was originally mustard. I think cars like the Rover P5B and Volvo Amazon can be improved in this way, and probably this HK500 too. If the best of its styling were brought out in a way that made it look like it got driven properly and thumbed its nose at concourses, it would definitely be cool.

Way back when I was a 12 year old paper boy, my newsagent had one. I thought it was cool then, now it's amazing.

What could actually be less cool than a French car powered by a US build V8 ?

I think it is also seriously uncool, that Mercedes-Benz seems to have been able to copy of lines of the front silhouette of The Facel-Vega, e.g. in the hideous 1960’es dictator container the M.-B. 600 “Grosser”

On the other hand the Facel-Vega HK500 actually did have a lot of very cool design features. E.g. did the French obviously copy the “scudetto” - the front grill area – of the Alfa 1900 (Berlina) from 1950-59.

As I recall from my older brothers’ childhood car books the Facel-Vega was one of the most expensive cars you could get your hands on. As I remember it, however, the company went bankrupt when they tried to take on Alfa Romeo in making sporty 4-cylinder saloon cars, replacing the Chrysler-V8s with their own flawed 4-cylinder engines. Of cause the handling of a Facel-Vega would be no match for Alfa Romeo, but since the French engines also wouldn’t last the Facel-Vega quality image was gone forever.

The “gossip columns” on the Internet seem to nail the coffin of “seriously uncool” claiming that he Facel-Vega owners were people like Pablo Picasso, King Hassan II of Morocco, The Shah of Iran, The President of Mexico, The Saudi Royal family, Fred Astaire, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Joan Collins, Ringo Starr, Tony Curtis, Danny Kaye, Anthony Quinn, Stirling Moss, etc…

OK, it is actually rather cool, that Sir Stirling Moss had one...

From an old Top Gear-clip on You Tube, it is easy to see, that the Facel-Vega HK500 handles worse than an overloaded fishing trawler stuck in a hurricane.

However, this you-tube-clip also reveals the details of a very fast and rather unique type of vehicle, - especially having in mind that the Facel-Vega was from the time when most of Western Europe was overrun by Harry Potter-type Ford Anglias :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQrwbzDTvSQ

Main rule : if you have to think about it the car is uncool, but in this case I have to say “cool” .

It's cool. It just is. I know I am no fan of French cars but this just looks right.
The American V8 just makes it better. It probably drives like proverbial crap but who cares.

If I could own one would I?
No, not at all which helps make it even more cool
