Opel Ascona 400

A unique pick for this Cool Wall entry. A rally car from Opel, with a decent pedigree.

But is it cool?

Cool, close to sub-zero but not quite.

Classic colour scheme in this case too which helps.

What makes it cool? I dare say the UK version would never be classed as such

Its just a Vauxhall Cavalier with a continental name

Got to admit I feel the same. There is nothing noteworthy about it.
Not cool but certainly not uncool. Just a car from a while ago and not even a decent looking one!

The 400 was an homologation special and quite successful. It's vaguely related to the Cavalier bodyshell, admittedly. It's cool despite that. maybe because of it. It just is.

The Ascona was a much nicer looking car than the Mk1 Cav. The blunt nose looked much more aggressive and they mostly all had rostyles. In 400 form it looked even better. I mostly don't think motorsport derived road cars are cool, but, for reasons I can't quite pin down, that one is. Maybe it's because it conjures up images from my childhood of the Lombard RAC rally on the telly with Russell and Jimmy giving it large through killer Kielder?

Cool.

If it was a cavalier it would be uncool.

The Manta was cool as well though, and the Monza would be sub zero.

You may as well say the Vectra Supertouring was cool because it had a sporty paint job and was an homage to the Vectra BTCC car

He's just being awkward. It's not even the rather charming "getting it wrong-ness" that we see from Senna and Shant.

It's pretty cool.
But it won't be to everybody's taste, there's no accounting for it

Even better in those original colours. The Rothmans and Andrews Heat colour schemes will also have a fond resonance for us older rally fans.

It wasn't an homage to the rally car, it was the limited production run they had to build in order to compete with it. A pure Group B homologation special with a Cosworth designed 2.4 litre twin cam 16 valve engine that was only available in the Ascona and Manta 400s. It had wind-tunnel developed air dams and spoilers. It was driven by many of the greats of the Group B era including the late great Henri Toivonen, Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen, Pentti Arrikala and Jimmy McRae.

The Vectra Supertouring was a ****-poor mass-produced repmobile with far more engine than the chassis could handle, decked out with a naff bodykit, and some stickers. It didn't even have the same engine as the touring car I don't think.

Auto Express - six issues for a quid. Offer must end soon (and then immediately start up again).

You're joking???

My Dad worked at both Darlington and Spennymoor. Happiest days of my youth living in the North East.

PM me his name mate.
