Ford Escort Mk1

Iconic 1960's and 1970's Ford. A car to motorise the newly affluent European middle class, but is it cool?

As an avid Ford hater, apart from the odd one or two, even i cannot argue that this is cool

Great fun but not cool. It's a serious car bore's car. "Those aren't the wheels it came from the factory with are they. The badges on your wings should say Mexico. Have you got an English axle. Goodness, are those 9" Capri drums? and so on.

I doubt that it was cool when it was new, but due to their popularity in historic rallying and rarity I would say cool now.

The FWD Escorts though were the biggest piles of poop going however.

I wondered if it might just creep over the line into cool, particularly now with the nostalgia and classic rallying many enjoy with it.

I even had a lurid big winged Mexico rally car way back when so I know they are fun ( mine was an unreliable piece of crap but that's another story).....enough to snuff out any coolness in itself.

But my gut instinct is that it isn't cool and ace Ford lover kb's argument just swayed me into the uncool vote.

No it's not. They're the easy answer classic car. There are so many at race meets that they just fade into the background ("Meh, another Escort.."), and the only thing of interest about them is what's under the bonnet. It certainly won't be whatever asthmatic pinto nonsense they came out of the factory with.

I don't go to race meets often. Hardly ever see them unless at a classic car show.
Then again I tend to think older cars are cool, the older the better. I'd go as far to say even 70's Renaults & Citroens are cool.
Most of them are probably broke though

The easy answer classic is the dreaded MG B !

They are relatively rare I think . Perhaps their status is different in NZ because not enough people keep common cars like Escorts going here. There are probably more Avengers with the warrant of fitness where you are than here than have an MOT here?
