Great proportions but not as natural as the outgoing 3 series Coupe. That red accent on the interior is a bit of a worry. Not cool.

I didn't notice it when I first posted the image. I went back and saw all the other interior images and the red accent seems to be either an option or linked to the outside color.

Looks almost as good as the Hyundai Coupe. Almost, but not quite.

I think, and this is a weird but logical thing, if it was just a continuation of previous models ie. a 3 series coupe, then it would be just about cool. The 3 has pretty much always been a very good car and coupe looks are nearly always a winner

But because its badged as a new model that sort of says BMW are looking to fill a market gap that isn't really there. Does that make sense?

Its almost as if i can see them next making a 3 series touring with a drastically shortened boot and calling it the 2 series

It has to be uncool. Not simply because it is a BMW (which doesn't help to begin with) but because it's yet another bit of niche scraping and fashion following. There's nothing especially new or novel about the design, it's not much more than a 3 with a bit of stretched floorpan for extra legroom and their "GT" silouhette - and it looks less handsome than the ageing A5.

Add to that that the 3 on which it is based, and the current 5 series are just so common on our roads, plus it has a corporate fleet target market, there is no way this can be cool.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Outside pretty good; interior so-so.

Typical contemporary BMW styling.

Not cool.

As others have said above, interminable sad sad filling of non-existent niches seems to be the order of the Teutonic day...

Monday morning design meeting:

"Ah, Norbert, guten morgen, nice lederhosen. I was wondering if you'd send me those sketches of the new mid-sized 4x4 crossover coupe conversion of the 4 series? It's as slavishly true to the brand identity as all the others, while maintaining a sufficiently canyon-like distance between itself and an actual "ultimate driving machine", it's perfect, I think the board will love it..."

This continuing trend is as deeply uncool as it is annoying.

You can't vote based on the concept car.

I gave this uncool, more because of the owners and why they'll buy them rather than there being anything hugely wrong with the car or its styling.

So, based on BMW's marketing, next we can expect a 2 series. 5cm bigger than a 1 series, 5cm smaller than a 3 series, designed for junior sales reps, or trainee estate agents.

After that, there's still room for a 4GT, 6GT, 7GT, M2, M4, M7, X2, X4 & X7.
The X2 will be for pregnant townies, before they progress onto the X3/X5 to take Tarquin and Chardonnay on the school run.

Then they'll re-launch the 8 series and do the same with them, and finally they will bring out the 9 series, after which the universe will explode as BMW will have run out of numbers.

OK, my last post was meant to be flippant/sarcastic.

I was wrong...
BMW 2 Series pictures | Auto Express

I particularly like these paragraphs...
Quote:
The BMW 2 Series is a new model range, which will replace the current 1 Series coupe and convertible; the 1 Series will continue as a three- or five-door hatchback only.

This move is similar to the new BMW 4 Series, which is replacing the BMW 3 Series coupe and convertible, with the M3 coupe becoming an M4 and the M3 continuing as a saloon only.

The range-topping M2 will serve as a successor to the limited-production BMW 1M Coupe. The M2 will feature a turbocharged straight-six engine, producing around 350bhp, plus uprated suspension and the latest version of the M Differential.

Don't confuse the M2 with the M235i, which will use the 316bhp 3.0-litre straight-six turbo from the M135i. It will be a coupe only, unlike the M135i, which was offered as a hatchback.
Is that the most confusing piece of marketing you've ever read?

To summarise, the 2 replaces the 1, but only sometimes. The 4 replaces the 3, sometimes. Buying an M in the 2 series means one of two things, not to be confused with anything else.
When a bunch of BMW owners meet up (I think it's called a "circle jerk"), each one will have to spend a good hour explaining exactly which model they have and how it differs from an almost identical one with a different name.

You're over-complicationg this.

1, 3, 5 & 7 are saloons (or maybe a hatchback sometimes in the case of the 1-series and the GTs). 2, 4 & 6 are coupes. Anything with an X is basically awful. I think I understand that; Odds = saloons & hatchbacks, evens = coupes.

They have blurred the M range before with the E28 when there was an M535i with lairy bodykit and the 3.5 litre six out of a 6/7 series and the M5 with the 286BHP M1 engine and no bodykit (which was utterly brilliant). Two very different cars. (Well not that different actually. One had a bit more poke, the other looked a bit flashy.) Surely you can see that a straight-six turbo is different to a turbocharged straight-six?

You mean one has a turbo at the front of the engine bay and the other has it at the back?

This is sounding more and more like "one song to the tune of another".

If that were the case, there would be a new niche for a 235iM (as opposed to an M2 or M235i) with a centrally mounted turbo.

I think they've cocked up though. Odd numbers are much more sporty than even numbers and are therefore better suited to coupes.
