Uncool. Too gimmicky, a coupe has 2 doors. If the wankel engine was that good a lot more cars would be equipped with it.

Besides, it looks boring anyway. Front too low, back too high. Its out of proportion

Massively dissapointing car which has to be worked so hard to get it moving!
No torque and horrible shiny looking interior bits look like its done 100 000 miles before its time.
I feek sorry for people who might buy one based on the great write ups and not test drive it first. Oh and oil as a consumable fuel additive.
Looks good though.

Garage
My housemate had one brand new when they came out, spun it into the central reservation and sold it for 8k as spares.

Was a cool car while it lasted.

Recently heard one trying to start but miss-firing - it sounded like a spitfire.

We all know reliability is boring lol.

Sub for me.
Mine is a mk1, not the one pictured, but it's the same car.
Don't get the 'uncool, it's japanese' as i don't get the 'french have no business making cars' nor i get the 'crappy dodgy italians'. Clichés.
Mine is a daily driver, no reliability issues whatsoever.
No problems getting it going pretty fast either.
Looks bland im pictures imo, has to be seen in the metal, but each to its own.
Personally i love it. Fell in love with it, took me a while to afford it and managed to eventually.
Its black so a bit more subtle and classy.
All of this has nothing to do with it being cool or not though.
I think it looks cool, its rare, with a bit of mechanical excentricity and a nice change from 330Ci's, 350Z's, TT's, Sciroccos and the like.

Cool. I drovin about 5 and a mate has 1. Takes some maintenance yes, bit like an Alfa in terms of owner mentality. Engine has to be driven hard and it sings.

Yes very thirsty in every respect but really quite an awesome car. The interior is meh...but sitting in one it makes you go oooh sporty.

Not for every1 but definitely a cool car.

Office Chair.

As said in the metal it's a looker. I love the cool rear doors, the Wankel engine. I have never driven one nor been in it but it does not matter all the above alone make it a car to own at or drive at sometime.
My ex's boss had one (2004/5 model) from new (probably still has it I shouldn't wonder) in a Mica red with red leather inside. It was a beaut.

Today it is cool, I think before long it will be super cool

I reckon it's really cool. but, as for why I can't say. i guess that's what makes it cool.

In many ways, having one must be like having an Alfa. There's no logic to it. The car has its faults (character), it's different from the run of the mill, uber reliable, designed and built by robot. Could be a gass to drive.

Cool for me. Driven a few normal ones and had the use of a Prodrive version for a couple of weeks. Fantastic driver's car. Engine is not my cup of tea, would love to slot a Busso 24v or a V8 in there.

Cool for me. Nice to have something unique and different.
I still rate Mazda as a car manufacture. Despite it being Jap and slightly unreliable.

But they do come out with some materpieces occasionally.

I've always felt that the RX8 would be a nicer looking car if the people who designed it had gone home/to lunch a couple of hours earlier. I like the basic shape, it's quirky and interesting, but there are too many little vents, scoops, bulges and twiddly bits added that make it look a tad fussy. The later one pictured is better in that respect.

I've never driven one but I know a few people who have owned them and raved about them and I'd love a go in one on the basis that I've never driven a rotary of any sort.

As for coolness, I think it's cool on the basis that it's different.

Really cool engine.

As a car though, just the opposite.

This is another of those fence-sitters.

It's a bit fussily designed in lots of places but as kb says, the basic shape, the trick rear doors etc are pretty good. It's a left-field choice too with its almost deliberately obtuse Wankel engine. Forget the dreadful economy and overlook the uninspiring exhaust note. It drives great with wonderful balance.

It isn't a "safe" choice. It could be a money pit or a depreciation nightmare for a new or near new buyer. It is a bit eccentric both as a design and as a car choice.

For those reasons I say it's cool.

Never liked the look of them, or the fact that they have 4 doors.

Uncool.

The engine is interesting, but then it would need to be with its woeful reliability and fuel consumption.

Interesting engine producing max torque same as Giulietta MA but at 5500 rpm instead of 1750 rpm ?
Hard work.

As i said, if the rotary was that good, it would be fitted to more cars

Would the RX8 have been as good if it had a real engine?

Case in point: 2CV. Dreadful car, cool (apparently)

RX8, pretty good all rounder. Ergo, its uncool
