it's cool because it's what it was never meant to be (a vw dna sports car with a van engine).

Thanks for selecting this one Ant!

This is a rarity in more ways than one as it is a Porsche that I'd argue is sub zero. It looks like a pumped 924 and we all know what a cheap and nasty piece of VW marketing it was don't we with its poor values and unloved status among Porker fans?

Well, look again. It's rarer than most 911's. it's cool because most people will dismiss it and only those who recognise it will appreciate how great a little car this is.

I've cut and pasted my answer to Shant on the main Wall thread with a few supporting details.

How do they drive? Are they good and famous cars?
It was more than a development of the 924 Turbo on which it is based and is much more than increased boost and perspex headlamp covers instead of pop ups. It was Porsche's initial ideas for what the 944 might become and to homologate a car for Le Mans and Gp 4 racing. They made 409 GT's, the GTS was a step up from that.

Only 59 were made, of which 15 were Clubsport spec (i.e. caged. lighter). They also did 19 GTR full race cars of which 9 raced or qualified for Le Mans.

Back in 1981, about 1100kgs and 0-62 in 5.2s was better than brisk even by today's standards. It had lovely 49/51 weight distribution, was virtually bombproof and handled beautifully. I can't remember which one but a famous driver, maybe Walter Rohl (not sure), still has one and rates it as among his favourites to drive.

Try this link to a you tube clip and report of one being driven recently by a journalist.

That’s a difficult one. I have to admit that I could quite fancy a 924 turbo or a 924S whilst considering them to be really uncool. I’d also happily run a plain old 924 (which really should have been badged as a VW in my view), at least partly because I know how much 911 aficionados hate them.

When I was thrashing around in a MKII Escort, one of my routes for a thrash took me past a farm where the farmer had a 924 Carrera GT and I always thought it looked brilliant. I can’t see how the GT, or the whizzier rarer version we are talking about here, could be anything other than brilliant to drive too. Light, RWD, enough power, perfect weight distribution, what’s not to like?

Is it cool though? I personally like how it looks, it’s more muscular and purposeful than the 944 and obviously much rarer. However, I’m not absolutely sure that unbiased eyes would say that time has been kind to it. There’s maybe a hint of the boy racer in it with the bulged arches and bonnet scoop, they are there for a purpose but the casual observer might assume you had done it yourself.

I think if you asked petrolheads, they would probably agree that it’s a cool car but I imagine it would fail Clarkson’s Kristen Scott-Thomas test. Based purely on appearance, it’s a pumped up version of something really uncool which reeks of failure on the cool wall.

I think this is one of the most difficult ones we’ve had. I’m leaning towards uncool I think, but can probably be convinced.

I agree it is a tough one, which is partly why I'm pleased I thought of it! (smug smiley)

Forget Jezza's old actress test in this instance as IMHO it isn't the acid test by which all cars must be judged. Like black and white there must be shades of grey at either end that could be taken as either/or - and in any case it is entirely dependent on context.

The fact that Joe Public - and even the less well-informed petrolhead - will dismiss it as just a cheap old Porsche (or VW perhaps for a pertrolhead) and maybe even consider the addenda to be well done aftermarket tat adds an interesting layer.

Its genuine rarity and proper motorsport pedigree add a tonne of kudos to this model.

I'd contend it is possible for certain models to be cool despite appearing to reside in an uncool area (Porsche 924) at first sight. The fact that it isn't considered universally cool by the more obvious arbiters only reinforce it to me. If you're cool you really don't need other people to acknowledge it. The important ones just know. And that is good enough.

Struggled to decide. I kind of like them a bit.
I went with uncool in the end, decided because when I see one I simply don't think of the driver as being cool for having it.
The only cool Porsche for me really is an air cooled 911.

Another one that falls into the category of:
Would I have one - Absolutely
Is it cool - No

I've been looking round the net at some 944's recently as quite fancy one. Not to expensive to buy and keep in running order for the type of experience you can have with them but my wife things they're butt ugly!!!
Pah, what does she know!

This falls into the crack between cool and uncool for me.

Depends which day you ask me.

Cool, 928 S was my fave but this matches it for coolness.

I class this as an early interpretation of a track focussed special. Kinda like the 911 GT3 of the 80s

Track specials are not cool. Neither is this
