I didn't think was way back then, but now I'm inclined to say it is in the right spec and colour.

Even back in the 80's I suppose it was a bit cool watching such big buses hanging out their tails on rallies having fun like your gran dancing after a few G&T's.

A neighbour who had one of the final E-type V12 roadsters also collected a Rover 3500 the day it came out.
That was cool. The outside looked like a Ferrari and the interior was a superb concept. The designer went on to design the interior for the Rolls Royce Phantom, stopping off at the Rover that replaced the sd1.

Garage
Way cooler now than it ever was when it was available. To my eyes it has never really dated - in fact I would go so far as to say it was ahead of its time.
For me the irony is the Germans spent years trying to kill off big hatches like this - and succeeded. Now they are bringing out big hatches aplenty see 5 series GT, A5 Sportback, A7.
As an aside, was the SD1 not orginally a prototype for one of the French or Italian manufacturers??

The SD1 was copied from a Daytona in a corridor at the studio in parallel with the project it replaced Rover SD1 3500, 2600, 2300, 2000 history

As a 20 year old driving a V8 3.5 litre SDI it was the COOLEST car on the planet. Sounded like thunder and the soft velour seats didn't cause 'carpet burns' on the girlfriends arse.

The Vikings went back to the land of Thor in disgust when this emerged. : From cars designed with character to a big box with little aesthetic appeal imho.

It was designed to look similar to a Ferrari apparently. Failed. It has 2 extra doors for a start, not that they would stay on for long. Its not very powerful either

Oh one more thing. Its a ROVER!

It was copied from the Daytona. Not the 400 . The front , side and back , but the round taillamps were too obvious to copy. Look at the DAYTONA.

Well ,I was about to tell you I heard this from one of the original Rover designers , Kevin Spindler, when I found this item on line about the design influences.
Rover SD1 design inspiration - AROnline
There was also the Pininfarina Austin 1800.
Also, the vitesse front airdam was not there originally and the facelift bumpers no longer lined up with the indicators , Daytona style....

I think it was cool 'at the time'.

When I finally had a ride in one it was considerably less so

Certainly appears to be the case. Still think it looks more like the 400 though

Maybe Messrs Bache , Spindler etc saw the original version of the 400 which came out in 1972?

Still, sd1 was cooler than the P10 that was being done in the main studio

I've just remembered an obvious omission from lottery win list of cars to but, run for a bit and sell on, in the form of a late twin plenum Vitesse.

Cool.
