A cynical marketing exercise parts bin lash up which (supposedly) doesn't drive that well and has nothing to do with the brand it wears on the badges.

Still cool though

Its a looker that it is for sure.
For me though to be sub zero, it has to do all things well.
But i would have one in an instant if money was no object.

Sure looks a beaut. However it is a big expensive in your face [supercar] and even though it is an Alfa it is not cool. I think most people would treat the owner as if they owned a Ferrari.

I think though this is really one of those on the fence because although as above it is an Alfa Romeo and by default that normally suggests cool.

That's a bit harsh!

The 8C Spider though has significant developments from the 8C. The suspension was significantly revised and an enormous strutbrace inserted in the engine bay. Quite a lot of effort was put into this and apparently the 8C Spider handles significantly better than the 8C, despite being a soft top.

The 8C Spider also has carbon brakes, an option not available on the 8C. This, in particular, has seriously annoyed some 8C owners, so I gather.

Nothing to do with the badge? Well, perhaps the inference is that this should be what the badge is all about. The fact that the brand continues to falter and fails to deliver even one tenth of the 8C Spiders abilities at present is obvious to all.

Sub Zero cool? Definitely.

I should be clear - my comments were aimed at the 8C in general irrespective of roof.

I'd take issue with your last comment I'm afarid. there's no way the Alfa Romeo badge should be all about limited edition 150,000+ supercars.

Alfa has researched the market for super premium cars and there is one. Not that the company should be "all about" them. All companies need a halo model to aspire to, unattainable is even better.
As the company was related to the career of Enzo Ferrari and he had a good relationship to Maserati , why not. I was reminded of this when visiting the Mille Miglia Museum and the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari recently . Just because some people wish Alfa to be a bargain used car does not mean we should forget the heritage.

Unquestionably sub zero. Simples.
Still would be even if it had a Chrysler badge.
Being an Alfa is just the icing on the cake.

I agree.

Actually, before 1940, Alfa Romeo was a 'halo' producer full stop. Cars were made to order and fetched truly enormous prices for extremely wealthy people. It was, in effect, the Ferrari of its day before Ferrari existed. Indeed (and as you say) Enzo Ferrari cut his teeth at Alfa Romeo before starting on his own.

Of the pre-war cars, probably the most famous is the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B:

Cromo Classico - Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B

Commanding huge prices today, the 8C 2900 and 2900B sits in the pantheon of the most expensive cars at auction, as depicted here (an 8C 2900 listed tenth at 2.3 millions):

We all know about the 'halo' Alfas post-war. Some of which today command huge six figure prices. One 'halo' model of course being the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, of which only eighteen were made, and stunningly beautiful:

Google Image Result for http://thechicaneblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Alfa-Romeo-33-Stradale.jpg

The 33 Stradale was the true forerunner of the current 8C, and can command prices as high as 750,000, as explained here:

Alfa Romeo T33 Stradale information on SupercarWorld.com

Of the other road going 'halo' models, there was for instance the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale (SS) (this one for sale currently at 60,000):

ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SPRINT SPECIALE 1300 For Sale (1961) on Car And Classic UK [C311452]

Then there is the truly beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ. Currently there is one for sale at 255,000:

Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ For Sale on Car And Classic UK [C320266]

And of course the racing GTAs and GTAm's of the late 1960's, which command huge prices, this GTA is currently priced at 110,000:

Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior Autodelta For Sale (1968) on Car And Classic UK [C320106]

Of course today is today. No harm in producing a 'halo' product imho. The Italians seem to specialise in this. And Alfa Romeo in particular has a long tradition in doing this. Long may it continue.

Spider ,I admire your hard work. There are so many cool cars in the history of Alfa. It's very difficult to do justice to them with a current range financed by a nonexistent /non profit European market .

I think supercars aren't cool was rule 2 (or it may have been 3). However, I don't think of that as a supercar in the mid-engined, Carlos Fandango, chestwiggy sense. It's more of a GT car in my eyes.

The styling is impossibly pretty and totally unfussy, it makes a great noise, it isn't completely impractical and ridiculous, and it's got a good badge. I imagine it is more likely to provoke "Nice car, what is it?" comments rather than "look at that flash ****" comments.

It may be a parts bin lash up it may not drive as well as Ferralamborgissangtraserati but it's sub-zero. However, if you all keep trying to justify it by harking back to the dark ages and talking about it having better brakes than the hard top, and a stiffer chassis and zzzzzzzzzzzzz

It will very quickly cease to be.

It's sub zero and one of those rare cars which is more desirable in convertible form.

It wears its price tag nonchalantly and doesn't care if you know or not. Unlike the typical "super car".

Some good points made here and it certainly makes me think it is higher than my initial 'uncool'.
Still I think I mentioned it should just sit in neither camp.
I think expensive cars are rarely cool. Mind you personally I think Aston Martins and Lambos are. I don't however believe that to be the general consensus whereas here with the 8C (Spider or otherwise) it might be an exception.

If you took the AR badge off it ..would you not think it was just a rather dumpy clumsy effort with more than a hint of a kit car about the rear end?
