The road-going version of the Jaguar D-type. Is it cool?

Cool, minus one full grade for being an unobtainable, undriveable museum piece = uncool.

Monstrously cool. Beautiful, elegant. An absolute joy to behold.

It doesn't matter a jot that it is an unobtainable museum piece.

1- beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i like the Veyron, many dont. This is nice but not stunning
2- many racing cars are uncool, being one doesnt automatically make it cool
3- still not sure

"Err.. no."
"Why not?"
"Are you kidding? It's autumn. We'd have to wait until next year. Also, my odometer's at 945 miles - if it goes over 1000, there's 100k off the car's value. It's worth millions you know. It hasn't been run in years. I keep the fuel tank drained. I can't just go for a drive."
"Oh. Well, how does it enhance your image and social status then? Nobody ever sees you in it."
"They can see I own it if they come around to my museum. If I'm feeling reckless, I'll even sit in it and let them take photos."
"So you don't drive it then?"
"I once had it trailered to a concourse. Old people with beards gave me a trophy for being wealthy, and they did a magazine feature on the car. So instead of driving it, I just look at those."

Not quite.

XKSS Jaguar | Classic Jaguar Replicas

XKSS

Realm Engineering

But at a price similar to a properly turned out GT40 replica or top end Cobra or Ultima.

I understand what you're saying but IMO, you are wrong. You are making an arbitrary decision about the possible attitude of someone who might own one - which is irrelevant anyway in ascribing the cool status of the car itself. Rarity and value are not (direct) considerations in establishing cool quality either, as I never tire of reminding folk.

In any event, a surprisingly high number of rare race cars and valuable classic car owners do in fact use them and often race them quite hard as they know that is the best way to appreciate them and they happily share that with the many spectators who turn out for events like Goodwood and Historic racing series worldwide.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
