Mercedes-Benz 500 E

A wolf in sheep's clothing. That's a very fitting way to describe this beast. Almost indistinguishable from the regular E-Class, this low flying rocket could be undercover until it struck, if so wanted the driver. It was hand-built by Porsche from 1991 to 1994.

Engine: M119 V8
Displacement: 4,973 cc
Aspiration: Natural
Power: 322 bhp (240 kW) @ 5,700 rpm
Torque: 354 lb·ft @ 3,900 rpm
Configuration: Front-engined, rear-wheel drive
Weight: 1,749 kg (3,855 lbs)
0 - 60 mph: 5.7 seconds
Top speed: 155 mph (249.4 km/h) electronically limited

It's not ugly... it's fast, a bit of a sleeper.. but there's just nothing to recommend it to get it into the 'cool' category. If there was an 'indifferent' option I'd pick that.
Uncool.

Sleeper is a positive point but it's just not stylish enough to be cool for me.

Doesn't matter what's under the hood if it's a slab-sided
square-headlamped monstrosity.

It's just about cool, but only because it's not actually trying to be cool. A real wolf in sheep's clothing.

you guys need your coolness parameters reset!

It's very, very cool! The neatly flarched arches, the noise it makes, the fact is was built by Porsche, and uses the handsome (if unassuming) W124 body to conceal that V8. It's much cooler than any subsequent or current AMG Mercs.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What he said. Nobody makes fast subtle cars any more. They all have to have two massive exhausts, 10" x 20" wheels and a myriad of badges to shout what they are. It's discrete, but bloody quick. I think of it as the spiritual successor to the old SELs with only a 6.3/6.9 badge to tell them from a bog standard 280 six-pot.

Cool, bordering on sub-zero.

If only I was bit more impulsive and could justify the running costs without feeling guilty about it.

Yes, why can't we have a middle category? 'Indifferent' would indeed be good, or possibly 'Can't decide'?
Anyway, just about cool for me this one.

Spot on.

I like the sleeper concept and the V8 noise, etc, but that doesn't make a taxi cool. Nor does bulletproof build quality.

Sorry g and keithyboy we differ on this one. It really is uncool and the mechanical stuff just keeps it out of seriously uncool.

No worries, Jim! So you won't be putting in a bid for the one that's for sale then?

I'm looking at our car park now, and visualising what it might look like parked where the Polo is. It's a nice picture forming

I don't think so g. Not my cup of Assam. I can see it would make a great old smoker and you'd get a lot of pleasure wafting about in it rather than Penance the Polo....but even you driving it doesn't make it cool.

Hmmm, in that case, there's no way I'd be seen dead in an uncool car

500 E? Pah, scratch that idea!

OK, not cool though. And that one in the Pistonheads link - looks like a £1,500 car not a £11k car!

Imagine one in black, lowered a bit, nice subtle exhaust on it, some tasteful wheels.. Just needs a 5-speed manual though not a slush-box.
