Ferrari F40

This was the last vehicle that Enzo Ferrari himself commissioned before his death. His goal was to remind the world what Ferrari was capable of and also to make the finest and best road legal racecar he could. He succeeded. The F40 also held the fastest production car title from its introduction in 1987 until 1989, when the RUF CTR Yellowbird appeared. It was also the first road car capable of reaching 200 mph.

Engine: Type F120 A 90º V8
Displacement: 2,936 cc
Aspiration: Two IHI Turbos with two Behr intercoolers
Power: 478 bhp (357 kW) @ 7,000 rpm
Torque: 426 lb·ft @ 4,000 rpm
Configuration: Mid-engined, rear-wheel drive
Weight: 1,100 kilo (2,425 lbs)
0 - 60 mph: 3.8 seconds
0 - 100 mph: 7.8 seconds
Top speed: 201.3 mph (324 km/h)

Probably my favourite mid-engined Ferrari but it's not cool. It's too stripped out, purposeful and hardcore which, on the road, makes you look like a tool. It's built to go a job but you couldn't waft to the south of France with a laydee like you could in a 456GT or something like that.

I would, nonetheless, give my left nut for one because sometimes there are more important things than being cool.

Sub-zero, The last of the really, really cool Ferraris.

Will chew you up, spit you out and remind you that you're only human, you can't tame a car like this. A true savage supercar, the way supercars were meant to be.

Every Ferrari since the F40 has just been varied in their degrees of disappointment compared to it.

Sub zero, my favourite Ferrari and probably my favourite car ever! Spent many an hour lying on my bed starring at the F40 poster on the bedroom wall when I were a lad. That and the poster of an XJ220

Whenever I see one at a show and once on the road to Silverstone, I start drooling
I'd better stop now before I drool over my laptop

What they said
Although I haven't seen one on the road to Silverstone
I did however see one in the South of France in 1990 (nearly 20 years ago) on Bastille Day. The owner let us have a good mooch round And when he started the engine and drove off

If I ever won the lottery the first thing I would do is go out and buy one of these.

As Keithyboy said its not a cool car but sometimes there are more important things in life than being cool.

Borne from the 288GTO, so more accurate to say......

I'd actually argue that the F40 was the end of an era. It's the last of the real supercars carrying the prancing horse

Deffinately Sub Zero! The F40 is one of the all time great Supercars, up their with the Ferrari 250 GTO, and Lamboghini Muira and Countach.
I agree its not a beautiful looking car, but as stated above it was the last car to where a prancing horse badge on it, that had input from the great man him self, Enzo Ferrari!
Its one of many Ferraris I dream of owning!

Ask yourself this though...

If it had a German or French badge on the front would you forgive it its kit car styling?

Yes. The motoring world doesn't begin and end with Italy.

I kind of like the Venturi 400GT as well, which was an unashamed rip off of the F40

If pushed I would describe it as purposeful rather than pretty but I quite like purposeful. I really don't like the styling of most modern Ferraris, I find them a bit fussy and over the top.

Seriously Uncool.
Too loud, too hot, uncomfortable and build like it's coming from a shed.
And it tries too hard...

Personally, I have to admit to never particularly liking the F40 but I still vote sub zero.

It is one of those special, iconic cars that transcends the normal, the practical and workaday niceties of usable cool.
