Lotus Elise S

This time we have a small and agile British sportscar. The trick is that it's lightweight, and that in turn gives it impressive performance even if the engine isn't too powerful. A track toy, in short.

Engine: Toyota 2ZZ-GE Straight 4
Displacement: 1,796 cc
Aspiration: Natural
Power: 136 bhp (101 kW) @ 6,200 rpm
Torque: 127 lb·ft @ 4,200 rpm
Configuration: Mid-engined, rear wheel drive
Weight: 860 kilo (1,896 lbs)
0 - 60 mph: 5.9 seconds
Top speed: 127 mph (205 km/h)

Uncool.

Great car, probably among the best at what it does.

But it's just too much of a cliche. It's the obvious choice for the middle aged bloke who's kids have left home and wants a fun car. It's the obvious choice for the executive who wants to chow he's cool because he's got a 'sportscar'. It's the obvious choice for the 'WAG' who wants something 'sporty' to sit on the drive alongside her X5, Cayenne or Range Rover Sport.

It's at the top of it's class, but that's not what the really cool kids like.

The really cool kids would by a Caterham

Too small to be considered a car, so uncool

Good at what they do but uncool.

A guy I work with drives one and he is about as poncy as they come.

Plus the engine note is pants as standard, and with a sporty exhaust they sound like any other chavved up 4 cylinder car.

Like RSK, I'm not sure about the WAG analogy but this line is spot on.

It is a fantastic little car but it fails to be cool.

That said, the Caterham treads a fine line too and it wouldn't be cool for everyone or everywhere but there are times when it is just right - whoever you are or who old you are - whereas Elise just looks like it has to try a bit too hard to be stylish which isn't terribly cool.

Going to have to call most of the other 50% guff too, HST. I'm that middle aged bloke, my kids are pretty well independent and I like a fun car. I can tell you here and now that I wouldn't buy one of these things - they are just too difficult to get out of. I love driving my son's VX220 but the very thought of getting out puts me off getting in... I drive something else for fun that doesn't cause me grief.

i have a friend who had one, granted it was an early one, but still it was an Elise...

He turned into a pillock who crawled up his own backside and the car slowly deteriorated around him, there was always something wrong with it.....and it had ZERO creature comforts

Coolish, and pretty agile, but I'd go the whole hog and get a Caterham or Atom I think. Had one up my chuff a few weeks back who wanted to prove a point. I held it off from a rolling start up to 60 (which surprised me, given the stats), but gave up when the guy clearly wanted to go into loony territory and eased past me at well over the legal/sane limit before a pretty sharp bend. He didn't go into the hedge though - I probably would have done if I'd tried to keep up..

Cute but a bit pretentious. I'd like to drive it however, so cool.

It's a bit of a mid-life crisis car isn't it? It may well have a sublime chassis etc but it's the sort of thing blokes in their 40s buy when their kids are too old and embarassed to be seen with them any more.

On that basis it's uncool but that wouldn't stop me owning one. I'd love a Caterham too but it's hard to see how a Caterham could be less cool without being on fire. a mate of mine has had a few and when he got the first one his wife went spare because he spent 12 grand on a car that didn't even have a stereo.

Great car to drive but ultimately uncool (I have been bored to tears by a lotus owner on more than one occasion)

My mate has a White Esprit Turbo, its currently undergoing a Gearbox rebuild in Clitheroe DOH!

I like the Elise but it is a bit of a toy, I could never have one as a daily driver, I like my little luxuries a bit too much.
