Sub Zero.

At the time, a 4 door saloon that was in supercar territory was unheard of. Bit of a Q car too!

Seriously uncool.

Unless you judge cool by impressing the likes of Nigel (the tash) Mansell. Put your future wife in that and say its anything other than a Vauxhall Carlton and she'd laugh uncontrollably until you both perished while trying to show her it's "credentials".

Aren't their any cool rules to refer to here?

The Lotus Carlton, in it's day, was absolute zero. The Q car of Q cars, a four door family saloon with Ferrari performance. Today though, with that interior, and probably a not insignificant number of the horses no longer present, it's cool. But still very cool.

you, my man need to have a serious word with yourself

to any normal person, i agree with you its just a Vauxhall Carlton (not the coolest of cars either). but by the same token its one of the ultimate sleepers. you need to be a monumental car nut to realise its a Lotus and if you dont, your gonna look one hell of a tool when you take it on in a traffic light drag and lose very badly

to me, all super saloons are cool. pretty much useable in any situation whether its doing the weekly shop, taking the kids to school or blasting it round a track

Without question UTTERLY sub zero.

and very strong to as one former East Sussex owner found out when he lost it at 150 on The Broyle in Ringmer. Everything on the car disintegrated but the cabin, him and his girlfriend walked away. ASTONISHING.

Nope - I stand by my opinion as i'm sure you will.
Except for the owner/driver of a "sleeper" who ever thought it was cool to get destroyed by one?
Maybe i've grown out of traffic light drag races and so don't see how performance/power/ability to shred tyres automatically makes a crap Vauxhall badged saloon cool - its a freak, a practical joke to draw attention to a failing manufacuter.

I wouldn't touch it with yours!

It probably shouldn't be cool but I think it is. It took a solid but quite dull car and turned it into a rocket ship with performance equivalent to the supercars of the time.

The thing that really makes it sub-zero though is that assorted tabloid newspapers and road safety organisations felt it should be banned.

Quotes pinched from PH:

The Association of Chief Police Officers reportedly labelled the Lotus Carlton ‘an outrageous invitation to speed’, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said it was a ‘high speed safety hazard’, and tabloid newspapers demanded the car be banned.

If that's not cool I don't know what is.

Sub Zero every time, was one of the ultimate Q cars......

I used to work on them when i was a Vauxhall Tech, we were sent to Lotus for the training and only after passing another exam could we work on them, the fun we had with customers cars :halo:

Nothing could seat 4 in comfort and cruise all day at 150mph like one of these could, remember in its day it was the fastest 4 door saloon in the world

You can't polish a turd, just cos it says lotus on it doesn't mean it's cool, it's an old saloon with a big engine and some suspension mods.

But underneath it;s still a poxhall utter ****e.

No, he's just one of the few people who realise they're looking at a snore-fest of a car. ;p
Cover up the picture and try to remember what it looks like (assuming you come from a country where they didn't have Vauxhalls beyond the 1970s).
Q-car status and safety nazis wanting to ban it lift it from 'seriously uncool' to 'uncool', because those are honestly the only things I can see which might appeal. To someone else. ;p

I excused the crappy interior because of the age of the car, but having spent a day looking around 80's and 70's cars at NAD, it's no excuse. Things like the GTV6 are certainly dated inside now, but they still look good. I think some can just make stylish interiors, and some can not.

It has to be said, my friends 03 Leon looks terrible inside, while my 03 156 is a lovely place to be.
