NSU Ro80

Today we have a very peculiar German car. It's got a twin rotor Wankel engine driving the front wheels. It had a bad reputation due to unreliability that ultimately damaged NSU's finances to the point that it was bought by Audi.

Engine: RC-2 Twin rotor engine
Displacement: 491 cc x 2 rotors
Power: 128 bhp (85 kW) @ 5,500 rpm
Torque: 116.5 ft·lb @ 4,500 rpm
Drive: FWD
Weight: 1,190 kg (2,624 lb)
0 - 60 mph: 14.2 seconds
Top speed: 117 mph (188 km/h)

CAR Magazine front cover '93 ish

'Where's the progrees?'

NSU ro80 compared to Audi 100 C4.

Alfasud compared to Alfa 33.

My memory is failing me on the other comparisons they made. There must have been a sports car in there somewhere?

I've been to the lavatory and a put the kettle on.

I think they also compared the XJS to the E-Type.

Re: NSU Ro80

TBH I never really totally liked the styling of the Ro80 but somehow I think it is quite a cool car.

It was really clever in its day. It isn't anything like dated looking despite being from the 70's, even now.

OK that is stretching it especially from the inside but you get my drift. There is a very ungermanic quirkiness about this car. The Wankel reliability has been pretty well sorted by modern specialists which sort of vindicates its design.

It is strangely appealing and it somehow seems classless but quite upmarket at the same time.

A timeless classic that was dynamically superior to almost everyhing else when it was introduced (1967).

Brave car, fatally flawed engine ...sadly.

Can you believe this is a 42 year old design?

Slim pillars are so sexy.

Not sure the trademark Audi arched glasshouse is there?

Carfolio has the wrong displacement.
Displacement is 995 cc or 2 x 491 cc, it's not over 1 litre.

Car for me is sub zero, because of design and engine, it was way too modern for that time.

I think it is junk from an engineering perspective, but the dedication needed to own one makes it sort of cool.

If you see what I mean.

I actually owned one of these for a couple of Months, but had little use out of it, although at the time it looked quite advanced, it was a nightmare to run, so uncool for me !!!!!.......

Re: NSU Ro80

Sexy car for it's time, still look's good today.
A lot of them ended up having the Rotory engine relpaced with the Ford V4 unit, also they had a semi automatic gearbox not to dissimular to the Q system.

Re: NSU Ro80

Styling is somewhere between bland, awkward and hideous.
Engine wears out all the time but doesn't offset this by being fast or economical or generally good.
And when you own one and someone asks you what it is, you eventually have to admit its point of difference is an engine designed by Felix Wankel, known as a rotary because it rotates, and the car's called the Rotatey.
How is this not seriously uncool?

Re: NSU Ro80

Do we think the creases on the bootlid are for aerodynamics?

It does have that high boot line for good aerodynamics that later cars have? I am thinking the Merc. 190E and Audi 100 C3.

Are those 5 spoke Alloys Fuchs?

Re: NSU Ro80

I voted sub zero. I had several of these, advanced automatic clutch by Fichtel and Sachs, aerodymically efficient, and NSU blew their brains out with it. VW bought Audi/NSU for the cars in developement, because VW only made rubbish at the time. They took on the Audi 100, which was quiet at 100 mph, and would return 38 mpg at an average of 90 up the motorway.
Ro80 was a true classic. And handled well. 14000 rpm in first anyone.
