Honda Insight

This time we have a hybrid car. I'll copy the technical specifications from this page for you to read.

"The Insight uses the first generation of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid technology (the next generation, used in the Honda Civic Hybrid, is much more space-efficient). The Insight has a 3-cylinder engine and a brushless electric motor located on the crankshaft. Behind the driver's and the passenger's seats there are a set of 144 V NiMH batteries. During heavy acceleration, the electric motor provides additional power; during deceleration, the motor acts as a generator and recharges the batteries using a process called regenerative braking. A computer control module regulates how much power comes from the internal combustion engine, and how much from the electric motor; in the CVT variant, it also finds the optimal gear ratio. The current battery charge is shown on the dashboard, as is the instantaneous fuel efficiency and current state of the electric motor — whether it is assisting the engine or charging the batteries."

Engine: I3
Displacement: 1 liter
Power: 69 bhp @ 5,700 rpm
Torque: 68 lb·ft @ 4,800 rpm
Drive: FWD
Weight: 820 kg (1,808 lbs)
0 - 100 km/h: 12.0 seconds
Top speed: 180 km/h (112 mph)

Re: Honda Insight

I nearly got an Insight instead of a 156! I decided to go for a 156, and I was allowed to discharge myself from the "special ward"

Insights are decade-old technology, and the rear end isn't very nice. The batteries allegedly produce a lot of pollution during manufacture and disposal. I'd rather wait for a more advanced hybrid, or a H2 powered car.

Going off on a tangent ...... there are motorists in the UK who have converted their Peugeot 106s to run on batteries, and they lease the battery for ONLY £100 per month!!! . I'd rather have an Insight than a battery-powered Peugeot!

Re: Honda Insight

Worthy but dull.

Seriously uncool.

I know an MD of a local firm who actually has one (as well as an AM Vanquish and an M5) - he uses it to commute to their factory most days. Cost not much used and he reckons its buttons per week in running costs as he uses it - certainly cheaper every day than the Vanquish!

Certainly not cool, but I'm a big fan of hybrid and alternative fuel technology on the whole.

Re: Honda Insight

Not only does it look like crap, it is environmentally unsound
and one of the worst cases of marketing bull**** ever.

Was offered one by Avis once and threatened to never
rent from them again if they ever again spoke it's name to me.

Jim, didn't it cost an absolute fortune from new in the UK? Circa £17k (maybe even £25k - that figure is rattling around my head).

But anyway - it is not cool. Geeky, maybe, but cool, nope.
