Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S

This used to be considered the ultimate cool car when it was released back in the early 80's. But, has it stood the test of time, or have those radical looks aged like bad wine? Has this Lambo become a classic, or just an outdated icon of its era?

I though they were cool as cool back in its day, I'm not so sure now though.

Always thought it a V10! Learn something new everyday!
Remember it sounding like a 10 rather than a 12, but was just a teenager when I heard it and haven't seen a real one since.

It would certainly make you look as it drove down the street. But I don't think it's cool. It's pretty ugly, and it screams 'mid-life crisis'.

Re: Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S

I had a poster of this on my bedroom wall as a kid. The first time i actually saw one i almost lost my virginity, even though it was a horrid purple inside and out. I promised myself i would own one when i grew up, but that never happened. I never owned one of these monstrosities either. And i'm glad. Back in the day they were the supercar. It was everything a supercar should have been. Wide, loud, fast, weird. It was an epitome of everything 80's. And that's a bad thing. Show somebody a picture of one of these now and they instantly shy away, embarrassed that they used to keep a glossy picture of it under their pillows for when their parents went to bed. If this car could be likened to a celebrity it would have to be Michael Jackson. What was once a super-cool supercar has, over the years, slowly transformed itself into something that could scare even Mary Whitehouse away. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Seriously uncool, btw.

Seriously uncool.

You'd look knobbier than a great nobby thing driving one.

How uncool is that?

its a very cool car, supercars are supposed to be insane both to look at and to drive, this does both, i cant think of another car of that era that still looks as mad today as it did then

Subzero, just look at that rear end..

I was at AutoItalia when a convoy of these arrived, I was totally speechless, they make the newer Lambos look boring and plain, and the newer ones don't sound as good either.

Re: Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S

This isn't really a midlife crisis car - more of a classic / enthusiast car. I imagine it would be too impractical in every respect for the average person, plus it's aknowledged as being a bit rubbish (worst drag coefficient ever!). You wouldn't buy it to pose in.
As mentioned it was an icon of the 80s so it is now a cliche of the 80s. But like Iron Maiden, while aspects of it are awfully '80s, it was cool enough that it deserves to live on.
Compare it to a DeLorean - the Countach is the real deal. It's the daddy. It's badass.
The Delorean wasn't the only wannabe imitator jet fighter designed-with-a-ruler car - there was the Subaru Vortex, the Lotus Esprit, the Aston Martin Bulldog, the Alfa Romeo Navajo... Everyone had one, but you can't go out and buy kit car replicas them now can you?

Surprised to see carburettors in that picture, but Wikipedia says: "All Lamborghini Countaches were equipped with six Weber carburetors until the arrival of the 5000QV model, at which time the car became available in America, and used Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The European models, however, continued to use the carburetors until the arrival of the Lamborghini Diablo.."

Ahhaarg! I'm so sick of that 'mid-life crisis' claim once a car enthusiast is old enough to afford cool cars. Must be jealous, sad, and dull people who can't stand to see others having a blast (Not thinking of you mamalasagne, I suppose you're an enthusiast yourself!)

So, big kudos to anyone taking care of a Countach. One of the most outré cars ever and the car that defines Lamborghini. However, it only gets a 'cool' from me - there's something about it that I can't put my finger on...

Re: Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S

It's cool, undoubtedly.

But time hasn't been particularly kind to it. I think we all thought in the future, all supercars would look like this. Hell I thought all cars would look like this.

Like a great 80's action movie, it was amazing at the time, but ever since you watched Blade or The Matrix, it just seems to lack something....
