Toyota MR2 Mk1

Ok, some may consider this car to be a classic. The pictures are of a car from the first year this model was built, 1985. I think everybody knows by now what MR2 stands for, but just in case Mid-engine, Rear wheel drive, 2-seater.

Engine: 1.6L I4
Power: 124 HP
Layout: Mid-engine, rear wheel drive

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

There's one in York, in a bright orange colour, with a VTEC or something similar in the back, with 190bhp at something like 9,000rpm.. And it sounds lovely!

I think this just scrapes cool, I'd turn my head for a look if I passed one.

If not tarted up and if they're well kept, they do look nice.

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

I very very nearly chopped my GTV in for one of these a few weeks ago after I got annoyed with it for needing a fair bit of work done to it to keep it tip top. I was being a bit melodramatic, but I calmed down and decided to keep the GTV. I do wander if I made the right decision though, because to me they're possibly the best small sports cars from the 80's.

EDIT: I diverged a bit lol, I think they're sub zero. They definitley haven't got the dodgy image the MKII's carry.

My dad used to have a bright red one, it was cool back in the 80's, and it's still cool now!

A modern classic in its own way but definitely, definitely not cool.

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

I never fell in love with these rockets. They are just too damn ugly. I remember the old man bringing one home to show me when i was a nipper and wasn't impressed then. Not even the flippy lights could do it for me. That disappointed the old man to the extent that he never bought his work home to show me again.

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

They're at that difficult age, too young to be a classic, too old to be funky and exciting. Classics should be dripping in smooth lines, classic design, chrome and style, this is dripping in Airfix kit plastic.

Not keen on the new ones either, the more rounded ones in the middle were my favourite of the MR2s but even they are looking dated now.

I agree - the MR2 is a much nicer looking car altogether.

Or the MR as it is called in France,
as "MR-2" => "Hassle/Sh*t/F***-off/P***-Off"

There's a string of car names like that, I heard Pajero (as in Mitsubishi) means w*nker in Spanish.

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

It's uncool, but not as uncool as the late Mr2's.

The MkII turbo was the kiddie, that one was sub-zero

Re: Toyota MR2 Mk1

Totally unbiased opinion - sub zero

I've had 4 mk1s including the ultra cool supercharged version.
Also had a Mk2 rev1 turbo which was scary.

Ok the EVO bible says only "handles better than an MGF" which isn't saying much BUT anybody who has ever had one will tell you they are cracking to drive.
Leaky t-bar roof as standard also means that you've got to love them to have one.

Oh and by the way its Mid engined Runabout 2 seater IIRC

IMO the Mk2 was a tub of lard in comparison - yeah i know i had one
