Re: Sunbeam Tiger

Brought out when MGB'ers were craving an 'E' iirc? A few Rootes Gp. merchants had one in their showrooms. Jack Waters in this area had an example I had a gaze at, and then I subsequently bought my previously owned 'E'. This reminds me of how ancient I'm becoming, if not already there?

Re: Sunbeam Tiger

Every Rootes dealer had to take one, like the MGC, at the time virtually unsellable. Ant's pics do not resemble the Sunbeam Tiger as produced. Believe me, they were a heap of rubbish. Cool? I don't know what it means.

The picture of Ant's depicts a 'Cack Ander' so guess it was a version for elsewhere? Up the follow on Simcas Eh, KG?

Surely better than an American car powered by a British V8 engine?
That Ford V8's stock power output is certainly rubbish but it'd have been rebuilt by now and could easily be making more than 164hp. And how much could the Tiger weigh?
Besides, old V8 sportscars are almost always cool no matter how slow they go. Sunbeam Tiger's factory quoted 0-100kph time is 7.8 secs, the Alfa Montreal (with 200hp) 7.5 secs..

Sunbeam Tiger factory quoted 0-60mph time is 7.8 seconds, and Alfa Montreal (with 200hp from a 2.6l V8) 0-100kph time is 7.5s.

That has the Sig. Caroll Shelby on the walnut dash, or do my eyes not focus correctly? If its genuine, I'll have it please, as a collectors item.:

Re: Sunbeam Tiger

I like the Tiger alot. I had an Alpine way back when which was the car the Tiger came from. The later Tiger Mk 2 had a 4.7 200bhp engine which I imagine would have been more than enough to keep your attention focused when attached to the crude Alpine chassis, fun though.
I didn't consider the everyday Alpine a load of rubbish, they were par for the course in their day which was usually rubbish by today's standard..I've never driven a Tiger so can't give a first hand opinion but I do know that Alpine,MGB e owners etc did aspire to owning them. Looking up at something you can't afford often gives a different opinion to looking down at the same car from above (see Top Gear for examples).
The one shown in the pictures is typical of what the American classic car scene is all about, silly wheels, trick paint and over the top interior. It does nothing for me I'm afraid.
After all that the question is whether its cool or not and the answer is ,only to Rootes fans. I voted uncool because I don't think they are head turners.

I would guess that the sigs were put on at a show or something similar. The other signature by the windscreen looks to be George Barris. It's a nice touch and good to know that the great men approve, even if some of us don't Here's a link to an article about this car.
