First Twingo was cool. All the following ones are not.

The current Twingo is just a Renault version of the Mercedes Smart which is made for DB to offset the decadence of the S-Class and avoid fines. Interesting result is the return of Rwd for Renault.

It is all about the rwd, rear engine option in a city car.

It looks brilliant.

Get down the dealers?

I just checked the price here. They are 18 Grand Euros.

I love the way small hot hatches drive, and Renault are very good at making them.

However that it is seriously ugly and that makes it uncool.

The Previous Renaultsport Twingo would tempt me, in fact I have considered buying one. But there isn't much room for the family.

It's a halo model. You're no supposed to buy it, but when you buy a cheap one there's the knowledge that the Twingo is good enough to have a £15 000 version. Isn't it?

Not the hot one. In boggo form it's quick enough (?) but it's oddly joyless. 40 kmh in first, 75 in second but there is no surge and no engine note. Handling is great, steering very light but for me it's all a little too refined. Although not haven driven many new cars lately I suspect that is normal.

Is it cool? Yes, remarkably. I have been stopped and asked about it and have caught lots of sidelong glances at it.

Must try the not one.

The UK never had the original so maybe
there's less preconception of what a
Twingo was/should be. (A cute micro monospace.)

It's just another super Mini. Just plain ordinary.... boring... Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Now if EP had said Renault 4, especially with the gear stick coming out of the dashboard. That's cool.

Or a Citroen DS 5. Gawd, I would love one of those. I could attach a silly false moustache and start talking like inspector Clouseau

Yup, all of those.

Let's break this down into chewable pieces:

RWD: Does that really matter with a tiny engine? I fully understand if you were a regular track dayer, but everyday driving to work or doing the school run? Nah. (And you wouldn't take a little Twingo to cane around a track)

Rear engine: Most rear engined cars handle like dogs.

110 Brake: Nice and frugal... refer to the first answer.

There are more super Minis than you can shake a stick at. Every company seems to make one. It just doesn't excite me. It's not individual enough.

If the shoes don't fit, change the horse.

Disagree

You can have plenty of fun in a RWD car with "only" 110bhp, even more so when the engine is slung out the back

You're right there are loads of superminis out there but they all have fwd front mounted configurations.

I appreciate this is a rebadged SMART but it's a cool little piece of packaging and a definite break from the norm.

Not saying for one moment you can't have fun in a small RWD car. Nor do I subscribe to the notion that RWD is necessarily better. For everyday use front wheel drive cars are just as much fun (or as much fun as the law allows).

Since 1981 I've owned more cars than I've had hot dinners (almost), rear wheel, front wheel and 4x4... or in other words I don't have a clear preference.

Back to the Twingo: As a concept or design it is bland -- just another modern design, no doubt aimed at a specific market. That market isn't me.

Put the Twingo in a multi-storey car-park alongside, let's say, FIAT 500, my 156 Sportwagon, modern Ford Fiesta and a VW Beetle. Which one will stand out the least?

If someone put me up against a wall and said choose between a Renault Twingo or have my toenails pulled. It'll be the toenails all day.

Cars are so subjective, so this is my personal opinion.
