My dad had a 300D with those lovely alloys. It had a 5 cylinder which you wait for the plugs to warm up. Proper solid engineering before Mercedes cashed in their reputation.

It's an interesting car with a certain cachet, but it's certainly not cool.

Clearly you watch too many 70s/80s cops programmes

"Mr. Bodie and Doyle are on our trail. We must dispense with the stash immediately. And we must dispose of the body in the boot!"

"That's not a body. I nicked that from the window of C&A last week."

My dad had one of those and it was a very classy vehicle for its time. I used to drive it as well and all the young ladies I used to entertain in it used to prefer it to any other car I had

The styling, it looks like the drawing kids do when they sketch their first car

A good car, but not a cool car.

This. It's not uncool either, so I voted meh.

It is one of those cars that looks better as an estate than it does in the saloon format.

Aren't the bonnets meant to be a different colour to the rest of the body work on those?

A 280TE like the silver one in the second pic was our family bus circa '84. After years of Italian cars, its build, finish and attention to detail, was an eye opener.

It was the first car I drove, albeit just a short distance from the front of our house to the garage at the back. There was barely a foot from the walls either side of the car and I was pooping myself. Couldn't have been easier. Loved the way it just glided off from rest gracefully when you took your foot off the brake. Over three years, it took us to Italy and back in air conditioned comfort, it got used and abused by my dad's clients (it served as a loan car to them). It also looked after us very well in a pretty horrible smash. More than anything, I liked the fact that, for such a big old bus, when knocked out of D and left in 3, it would hoof along, with a nice sharp snarl that was rather unexpected from a car that looked so monastic. One of my dad's clients asked to buy the 280TE, and it made way for an Alfa 6. From memory, we didn't keep that very long.

Is it cool? Even Mercedes referred to the W123 as a 'utility' vehicle (like a Unimog!). But I think you can guess where I am on its cool status

Alfa 156 SW

Immediately brings the smell of leaking diesel to mind.

In this part of the world only driven by taxi drivers, great-granddads and (this was during the cold war) high ranking Eastgerman spies.

Drove one mylself for a trip to (West-) Germany and back for a couple of days. At the time I had an Alfasud. Compared to the Sud the Merc. handled like an old lorry.
Seriously uncool
