The flagship of the range, the 220 Coupé Turbo's performance came from the T-Series 2.0 litre 16-valve engine with turbo producing 197 bhp and 174 lb·ft.

The fastest production Rover? achieved 150 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and 30-70 mph in 5.7 seconds in a 1992 Autocar test.

Torsen torque sensing traction control, uprated suspension and ABS as standard.

Has a bit of retro kitsch but it's not cool. Nope. No way.

Not sure on this one. It's definitely not seriously uncool. Possibly cool.

It looks almost passable especially in the dark blue but it has problems even flirting with the word "cool".

Most significant of these is the badge followed closely by its relationship to the 2 series Rovers which were monumentally duff.

I had the misfortune to buy -in a rush due to missing a couple of 405M16's I hasten to add- a 220GTi hatch after my quite wonderful AE86 Corolla GT coupe. The contrast could not have been more stark. Build quality was awful. It rattled and clattered, and while it appeared to have a lusty motor it was hopeless at transmitting much to the Tarmac. It handled like the proverbial pig on stilts and the seating position felt as high. I sold it on at a big loss after a few months - the shortest time I'd ever owned a car. As such my view of these is that they are hapless turds lurking by the U bend of motoring history awaiting the final flush.

Uncool.

Coupe. Cool

However. Rover, uncool. I do think it's a bonny looking thing and the engine gives it a bit of kudos.

Amazing how the badge on the bonnet can render a potentially very good car uncool

I think it was quite cool at the time. Rover was doing well, and they were a brand on the up.

Faster than an Escort Cossie in a straight line, but they were terrible on the corners due to the chassis not being up to the job...

They are certain to be a classic as one of the best cars Rover made.

The only person I knew who owned one of these was a proper Walter Mitty fantasist, full of tales of how great he was. He kept a framed Mensa certificate on his workdesk - that's the type of person we're talking about here.

He has indelibly stained the car by association. I cannot think it cool.

I once owned one of the later (more modern interior of the last Rover 200) 1.8vvc Rover coupe.
Loved it.
Was a fab car.
And pretty too.
So the tomcat gets a cool from me. :-)

Cool. My Dad had an 800 fastback Vitesse turbo that I drove when these were around and they were nice cars in my eyes. FVourite colours were BRG or black. Had their flaws but a bit of character as well. Almost sounds like describing an Alfa!

The last cool rover was an SD1 imo, and even then only if it was a vitesse. The 75 ZR260 thingy, maybe but it's technically an MG. But not a 200 tomcat.

Scratch that, 200 BRM. They're kind of cool.

The train :(

It has a good engine, however there's something about the design that does not have that wow factor and means that it is just not that stylish. Not cool.

I was only thinking of these the other day. Only ever saw one in the wild and despite it being a desperate 200Vi with orange lipstick, it looked so cool in a very silly way

I had one in the dark blue - not the turbo version though. Loved it. Something retro cool about it. Part exed it for my first Alfa - a 156 2.0 sele.

I think I'd quite enjoy trying to get one properly sorted handling wise.

I suspect that as I get older I'll get less forgiving about trim rattles etc.

Biggie finds himself in an alternative universe where Rovers are cool.

Office Chair.

I liked these quite a bit in their day.
I joined Warwick Manufacturing Group (associated to the University) in 1995 and as such went on the Rover car scheme.
They (WMG) were ramping up to support Computervison's CADDS and were recruiting lots of folk, and also had a kinship with Rover who also at the time used CADDS5. We were all on the Rover car scheme and a couple of the young'uns had these.

I just don't see this era of Rover cool, not just yet. I do know those folk that had them on the scheme loved them.

I'm not going anywhere, I'm just going.
Statements above are all my own opinion and not fact.

I liked the look of it when it was new and I still do. It's clean and unfussy, much like the C70 of similar vintage. However, the badge will always be an issue and if you see one now, it will probably be dog rough. Uncool.

I quite liked these back in the day. Never tempted to buy one, did they ever badge one up as an MG?
