tar remover???

Hi does anyone know of some really good tar remover??

I got my alfa in decemeber and although i wash it weekly i have never got round to removing the tar splattered along the lower parts of the car.

Whats the best way to remove the tar with out damaging the lacquer?
I bought some turtle wax gear but that seems to be crap... mind you the tar might have been on for quite some time

I have seen valaters use a thinners type fluid which softened the tar and it comes off with a few rubs... but it cant be thinners though.... surely?? (mind you the valeters weren't the best set up)

Had 2 fabulous 147 gta's but also
clio v6, m3, mazda 3 mps's, fiat coupe 20vt, nissan pulsar, clio f1, clio 172 cup, megane 225, renault 5 gtt's, xr2, bmw 320, afla 156 2.4jtd, twingo gt, 306 gti-6, rs2000, clio valver, rover 220 turbo, 335d touring,
And now jb4'd 135i with bmw performance bits

A WOMEN DROVE ME TO DRINK. . . . . AND I NEVER HAD THE COURTESY TO THANK HER.

Re: tar remover???

As a former pro-valeter, I used Autoglym tar and adhesive remover and swore by it..dunno if you can buy it in the shops, but if not, white spirit or wd-40 will shift tar spots...just be careful if you have side skirts as it might if you used loads soften the glue, but highly unlikely, and no it won't harm paint or lacquer

Re: tar remover???

I still have a chuckle when the department I was working in ordered some sticky label adhesive remover with a delightful lemon scent. White spirit with a spot of lemon juice, at a price?:

Re: tar remover???

Yeah turps or white spirit. Leave a few minutes. Clean off and polish up. Cheap and cheerful, doesn't damage the paint.

Re: tar remover???

I use panel wipe solvent. Works well and it's great for preparing the car before a polish & wax

Re: tar remover???

I wouldn't use clay to start off with. Complete waste of money and effort IMHO. You will ruin the clay.

Above products are all good. I use Meguiars Tar and Bug Remover on a soft cloth.

Re: tar remover???

White spirit does the job, so why pay the extra for a label and brand name? Regardless the area needs protecting with a decent polish after the tar has been removed?

Re: tar remover???

autoglym tar remover i find a bit, well... useless!

done nothing for cars, white spirit works, but dilute it, and wash it off imediately

Re: tar remover???

AG's intensive tar remover does the biz. Saying that, SRP does too. Dab on, leave for a minute & polish off

Yep , another vote for White Spirit here .
I don't think I have ever used anything else .

I'm told that its quite good in a tall glass with Coke & plenty of ice , too !

Re: tar remover???

Parafin (aka Turpentine substitute). 3 for 2.5 litres at Homebase

What you don't use for removing tar makes a handy petrol-additive-come-injector-cleaner (250ml:50 litres)
