theshinexperience: Two days with a GT in a very rare colour

Hello All,

Well the task for Monday and today was to detail a 2005 GT in an extremely rare colour. Peter, the owner, told me that he knows of only one other in this colour and I have to stay it is absolutely fantastic!

Peter will probably be along later with some even better photos but here are a few to keep you entertained for now.

I have been deliberating what colour to repsray my GTV when it comes off the road in a month or so, but now my mind has been made up, the answer is............ 117/B Rosso Brunello.

Anyway, on with the detail.

Peter has only recently purchased the car and wanted the paintwork to look absolutely perfect.

As you can see there were a fair number of swirls, and being Alfa paint it was the usual pairing of soft and pretty thin.

After some paintwork correction I was left with the following. You can see how the depth of flake in the paint was being hidden by the swirls.

The sun was shining both days and providing absolutely perfect working conditions.

More swirls on the boot

Then corrected (Excuse the product smear residue in this one, which hadn't yet been wiped off)

Look at this flake

So the finished article

Apologies for the shortness of the write up, but I am getting married on Saturday and so I'm a bit short on time at the moment.

If you have any questions at all then just let me know.

Thanks for looking

Roy

All the paintwork correction was done by rotary machine polisher. The products varied a little depending on the panel, but all of the polishes were from a company called Menzerna. Some panels only needed one of their finishing polishes, whereas others needed a step up from that (intensive polish IP 3.02) and then refined.

Cheers,

Roy

I used to think Detailing was a posh ( and expensive) word for polishing.

That is stunning, wonderful, sublime

Outstanding piece of (hard) work. Owner must be very pleased.

Do you explain how to wash the car properly after that effort?

The trick is to avoid putting micro scratches back onto the clear coat, which are what causes the swirls. So that is really down to good washing technique - and good washing technique is common sense really when you think about it. Grit on the car acts like an abrasive if rubbed which gives the swirls on the car and reduces the shine.

So best is to prewash the car by using snow foam. I dont have this so what I do is simply hose (not pressure wash- garden hose) the car down with cold water and loosen off the worst of the dirt.

Then using two buckets - one with warm water and car wash shampoo - the other with cold clean water - wash the car with a lambswool mitt. Dip the mitt in the shampoo bucket, wash an area of the car and then rinse the mitt in the cold water. Mitt back into the shampoo bucket and start again.

As you get near the bottom of the car you should be rinsing the mitt in the water more often to avoid washing the car with grit.

I normally do the wheels last with what's left in the shampoo bucket but have a separate sponge for the wheels.

Finally dry the car off with a micro fibre towel to avoid any water marks being left on the car, especially if you are in an area with hard water.

If you don't already use this technique, it's just a case of changing your habit, it doesn't take any longer really.

There's better guides on detailingworld.com.

Cheers
Alan

Re: theshinexperience: Two days with a GT in a very rare colour

Aye! That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

First time I went "two-bucket" I was shocked how much grit ends up in the "cold" (or non-shampoo) water bucket. By comparison, the shampoo bucket water was amazingly clean... I can't believe I was bunging the black 'orrible sludge in the cold bucket back onto the car before..

Oh.. and Congratulations Roy, on your nuptials!

Great correction job. Well done.

Menzerna really is top class stuff.

What an unusual colour. I still can't quite decide if I like it or not. What I mean is that it looks good on that car but I cannot imagine it on my car.

You bet I am delighted - I am trying not to get too anal about it as it is 4 years old but Roy has taken several years off her.

I only know of the 2 of us at the moment. I have seen Rubino and Proteo ones but Brunello was not in the catalogue and only done to special order apparently.

Did you have to request the colour as a special order?
