Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

Hi All,

Since buying my 33 last October I have been loving everything about it but the paint...

I have tried T-Cut but it doesn't seem to have done much but give me severe cramp on my hand!

The worst bits are the bonnet and roof - just wondering if anyone can kindly give me a quick idea on what products to buy to resolve this?

I am going to purchase an electric buffer next week.

Many thanks in advance for your advice !

Matt

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

Lack of funds prevent this unfortuantly!!

Want to keep the car original anyway - there isnt a spot of rust on it, just needs a good buffing but don't know what product to use..

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

Sorry about that ...I wasn't trying to be clever. Its just that IMO the fading can never really be bottomed with cutting or polishing.I have tried on previous Alfas and ended up getting them painted after a lot of hard graft.

No its fine - its just there arn't many 33 cloverleafs left and would prefer to keep mine original.

How much would a full respray cost out of curiosity?

Cheers

I would reckon on anything from £1k up depending on what you can do yourself, however I stand to be corrected.

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

I have the same predicament on my 155, its the front bumper i ve tried buffing but its not really worked and i ve been advised it would be costly just for a bumper. There must be a product out there to get it looking good .

It more than likely requires machine polishing to bring the paintwork up. Can you post a picture and I'll take a look for you.

I thought so...The guy removed the sills, front and rear bumpers, rear spolier and mirrors and painted them for that price.Well pleased.

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

I had mine painted in Lincoln. The paint shop used a spectro analyser to get the pigmentation correct.Having said that IMO I could always tell the plastic had been painted.I think once you know you have had the car painted your eye is drawn to it.

Machine polishing should bring the paintwork up, and as long as it stays protected the colour won't fade.

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

Polishing wont work I'm afraid. The paint has a top coat of lacquer. The paint is faded under the lacquer, any polishing, or products used are on top of the lacquer.

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

I use Farecla G3 on my sprint, which was pink when she was delivered (very manly) anyway, nice and red now. Only problem I found with re-spraying certain parts on my 146 was that the rosso 130 was a lot more orange than the paint on the car (tried buying from several places and they were all the same) probably due to slight general fading of the paint all over. Anyway I wasnt too bothered as there was black trim dividing the colours and they werent too far off but next to each other would have been awful. Thats why I havent gone that route on the sprint until i have the time to do a fill re-spray. In the meantime its Farecla G3 for me. (god that was a needlessly long explaination )

It's the lacquer that oxidizes and causes the paint to appear discoloured or dull, machining will fix it.

Sorry that is total ********. Is the paint is single stage then you can polish it. If the paint pigment is failing beneath the lacquer then the only solution is to repaint. I'd imagine it was single stage on an 88 Alfa 33, easy test, get some brasso and a bit of kitchen towel and have a bit of a rub on the bodywork, if it comes up red then you're in lucky. Buy a cheap rotary polisher from ebay, a soft red pad from machinemart (if it doesn't come with one) and some Wilkinsons colour restorer polish, spend morning returning paint back to nice shine. Use a wax to keep the shine

Re: Faded red paint on my 89 Alfa 33

If this is any help to anyone of the above posters, when I eventually got round to doing my 146 bonnet (worst offending part) i polished using g3, no red came off onto the cloth but the paint did go back to red from pinkish. Hope that helps
