Best way to polish out feint scratches and marks to my silver paintwork

Hi

So as the title says I'm looking for the best products and methods for dealing with superficial marks and scratches to the silver body of my GTV.

It's not something I've bothered with much on past cars but I want to make an effort with this one. I'm wary of using T cut because I've heard stories of the lacquer being removed and so on.

I'd be very interested to hear what you guys have had success with.

Machine polishing would be easier, t cutting is very hard work !

As a general rule, if you can catch a fingernail in the scratch its usually too deep to polish out as its gone through the lacquer
I've never gone through the lacquer with T cut, its far riskier with a machine polisher especially if you keep it in one area too long.

I just improved my car no end using Autoglym Paint Renovator followed by Super Resin Polish. I had purchased some Scratch Remover - more aggressive than Paint Renovator - but didn?t need it in the end.

Working by hand, it took about 3hrs to complete the application of Renovator plus Polish on my Spider. I doubt you will do anything but improve your paint with these products, but if you?re concerned, try them out on a small area first.

I used an old microfibre cloth to apply the Renovator; then one of the Autoglym foam applicators to apply the Polish; then a new Autoglym microfibre cloth (came in the scratch repair kit) to buff. No clay kit used.

Best way is always a DA mashine.. duel action.. DAS 6 is usually the starter polisher.. 400w or 880w versions. 90-120 quid.

Decontamination: Mac 124 Prickbort for asfalt and Carpro IronX for metal particles/ used for paint but also can be used on wheels, and should be used on wheels to get brake dust off.
Cleaning: Duragloss #901 with 2 buckets with grit guard.
Claying: Bilt-Hamber Surfex HD as lube and Nanoskin fine grade.
Polishing: Das 6 900w with Microfiber cutting pad with Menzerna FG400 and white hex foam pad with Menzerna SP4000
Sealant: Collinite Super Doublecoat No. 476S : lasts 1 year.
or a Coating.

if you dont do step 1-3, you will get scratches when polishing. and you only need to do the clay step once every 5 years or so.. maybe less if you decontaminate the paint every 6 months.

trade used a product called G3, I use the ULTRA compound its equivalent to around 2500 wet and dry so it is quite abrasive, a machine polisher would do 3 hours of work by hand in around 10 min and the results are far superior, I then usually go over it with a polish head and polish back to a perfect shine, I actually don't personally think its possible to do what you can do with a machine polisher with your hands its just not possible no matter how many hours you are into it

Mad good job on your car Willie, but can I suggest a better wash method than the classic 2 buckets. It's fine for pros who cant carry a trailer full of mitts around but the multiple mitt method is even better for home gamers. I have 10 mitts for my car and 2 for the wheels, i use one mitt to do a small part of the car then put it aside and grab another.

You don't need a grit guard or second bucket (you can use one to throw the dirty mitts into if you like) because your only ever touching your car with a clean mitt. Even with a grit guard and second bucket your mitt is still going to have dirt in it and that will build up the further you get into the wash. With my method that never happens.

As Willie states, it is a far better method to use a Machine polisher and will get more professional results

If you're a bit nervous about using one, go and see a Valeter or detailer and kindly ask if you can watch them at work with one, they are easy once you get the hang of it. Another point, if your GTV has soft paint like my GT then it should polish up virtually like new.

Yeah I understand and will buy one, I'm just wondering what one polish I can use rather than the two he mentions.

Also, I assume out of all the stages he mentions, the machine would only be used at the polishing stage? The other stages are all applied/removed by hand?

I'm a total noob to all this

yes it is.. the FG400 finishes nicely as you saw on one of the pictures of the rear quarter. that is only used a 1 step. because of the soft paint slight ``marring`` happens because it does not finish 100% like a polish which is why it is a compound. very few if any compound can polish out like a real polish which is why people do a 2 step.
but its fine if you want 95% finish.


long term, 3 bucket with a mitt. some soap, wheel cleaner and glass cleaner every 2-4 weeks.. get the bugs off within a day. decontamination is done every 3-6 months. sealant is done every 6 months to 1 year. coating is done every 2-5 years.. depending on the product.

yes it is only when you have washed/clayed/decontaminated that you use the polisher to correct the paint. you might use it for spreading a sealant or wax but you dont have to.

pads come in different course colors.. you only need 3 for alfas.. orange for compounding.. white for polishing.. and a red for spreading wax or sealant.

compound = cuts more and leaves a white haze effect.
Polish = enhances the shine by sanding off the white haze that compound leaves.

Check this products out!

There are many specific products to polish your car. I tried products and they work perfectly.
They are leaders in Italy and their products are very good. If you want, you can try it.
