Yellowed rear window on Spider

I need some advice on my late husband's 1987 Spider Veloce. The plastic window on the soft top is so badly yellowed I don't feel safe driving the car with the top up. My mechanic tried to clean it with some results, but it's still badly yellowed. He feels that I will need to buy a new top, even though the rest of the top is in excellent condition. Is there any way to clean this, or am I resigned to buying a brand new top?

Renovo plastic window polish, will help but not solve.

The UV from the sun as reacted with the content of the vinyl rear window. So mostly the yellow is al the way through the material, not just the surface. But Renovo will help

I think there are several options here. Firstly, buy a new hood which is obviously very expensive. Secondly, any decent detailer should be able to at least improve things or hopefully make a big difference. Thirdly, the DIY option.

Here is a video showing some work on a clear window (about 10 minutes in)


The video shows Meguiars PlastX which is a good product as it is easy to use and is mild so unlikely to make things worse. There are plenty of alternative plastic polishes but no matter what product is chosen, it is important to follow up with a dressing of some kind as this will protect the plastic from fading so quickly.

As you are in the USA, might be worth looking at Convertible Top Care Detailing 101: clean and protect vinyl and fabric convertible tops. for some products

Thanks for the reply. I have already had the plastic professionally "cleaned" and it improved it somewhat. However, I'm still not comfortable driving it that way with the top up as it's hard to see out of it. I guess my question is, is there no way to just replace the back plastic? Why do I have to replace the entire top when only the plastic is damaged? The rest of the top is in excellent condition.

It is worth trying JWQ's suggestion and try and find a local firm which deals with hoods. I did not not know a rear window could be replaced but my knowledge trimming vehicles is low.

I have polished a fair amount of plastic in my time and most can be improved. In your original post you said your mechanic had done the work. Cleaning and renovating plastic is a different skill which a mechanic may or may not have. It is possible the plastic is so damaged by UV light that it cannot be easily fixed but one would also expect to see the rest of the hood also in poor condition.

The cheapest option would be to buy a mild plastic polish like Meguiars PlastX and do a test section of say 12" x 12" or find a local firm who specialise in hoods as they could examine the plastic and say if it could be replaced or cleaned
