If you had bought a used steering rack for a 156 GTA, are there any identifying features you could look for to confirm it was indeed a 156 GTA rack as opposed to a GT or 147 rack? I would have tried to measure the rack ends but they seem to have fused with the track rod end... I presume there is a part number on it somewhere but I have yet to find it (sigh).
There's usually a plaque on them in the middle part of the rack under where the column attaches, with a part number on the plaque which you could google, but they are sometimes missing and usually covered in old oil.
Cool, ta very much. To be fair it was indeed covered in ps fluid / oil so the plaque could have been there. Is there a marked difference in the GTA/V6 racks? e.g. 156/147/GT?
I think 147 GTA & GT 3.2 use the same rack, 156 GTA might be different. Something in the back of my mind tells me the splined bit where the column attaches is the difference.
Interesting. That would be annoying if you'd picked one up thinking 'it's a GTA rack' only to find when fitting it that the column end doesn't fit, I'm glad I asked. Ta Dan
Hmm. No plaque sadly but the column attachment will spin twice (not sure about 2.2 turns) but marking it at full left lock, and spinning it to the full oppo lock is definitely 2 full turns. Also, there is a part number on it, 37502329, which Google thinks is a JTD/JTS part. Potential argh! :grumpy:
The rack on my 156 GTA starting misbehaving after about 150,000 miles. NJS managed to get it refurbished by a specialist for me. I have no idea who they used.
I don't suppose anyone has a spare 156 GTA rack they could read me the number off, not the plaque number, but the number stamped into the part itself. Proper massive thanks in advance. It just gives me a bit more to discuss with the seller when I ask to return the one I have
There's a risk that the number on the casing is just the number of the casing which might be common to a number of models, rather than the number of the assembled rack specific to a particular model.
I guess that's why the plaque approach is adopted. The plaque number will be specific. It's rather a shame that the plaques tend to fall off or become illegible.
