UK Giulietta suddenly speaks Italian!

Hi all. On starting my August 2015 Giulietta 170 Multiair TCT this morning all the dash messages and uConnect displays were in Italian. Everything had been fine last night when I parked up. Consulting the handbook, the dash menu is supposed to have a set language item but mine doesn't. The Uconnect (6.5" version) Settings > Display menu has a set language option but it's greyed out and pressing it just beeps. I rang my usual dealer (Piccadilly in Knaresborough) and they said they'd heard of that happening before but wanted to have the car in to check it over. That's a 90-odd minute journey each way for me so I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks for any advice .

My car also has the poor DAB reception issue though the FM is fine, and the TCT selector is very stiff when the car is cold so a trip to a specialist is likely soon but I'd like to solve the language issue sooner rather than later!

I have literally no experience of that problem, but for blue and me issues I've read that disconnecting the battery for half an hour then reconnecting can reset it. Genuinely no idea if that would help though (instantly wins vote for least useful comment of the year). Oh and if you should do that: when you reconnect the battery you'll need to turn the ignition on, turn the wheel from lock to lock, and turn the ignition off again. Otherwise it screams about hill assist and steering issues 🙂

Thanks Petitpal - "switching it off and switching it on again" can often help with stuck electronics but I'm a bit loathe to disconnect the battery in case it provokes any unexpected data or settings loss, or Italian dash messages I won't understand! I guess it's a trip to the dealer. Everything else seems unaffected.

I assume you tried setting the language whilst the car was stationary..... Some menu items are locked-out if the car is moving....

It was stationary, yes. I tried it both with and without the engine running. I'm pretty sure I tried it with the ignition off too but I just had another go. With the ignition off the option was not greyed out but it did not respond when I selected it. So I switched the ignition on again with the radio off, switched the radio back on, and hey presto it allowed me to select English. Bloody computers! We'll see whether it flips back to Italiano next time I use the car ...

I am sure you have already tried this but, when trying to change the language did you try to set it say German and then to English. Just thinking if the car already thinks its in English then re-selecting English may not have any effect.

True that! However I couldn't even select "Choose language" (or rather "Seleziona la lingua" as it was in Italian) because that option was greyed out!

Use the Engineering Menu to reset your radio (reset NOT factory Defaults)

Then see if it will let you select language. It sound as though your uConnect has had a bit of a break down.
