How to mount springs of giulietta QV in giulietta 1.6 JTDM?

Hello,

I've seen online videos of how to change the springs of other car brands, but none of the alfa romeo giulietta.

Do you know of any tutorial or video that showed the steps to follow to disassemble the springs?

Thank you.

It looks to be a similar procedure but the way the lower part of the shock attaches to the hub is different.

You need to unbolt the clamp bolt on the hub and pull the hub downwards to seperate it from the shock as it clamps around the bottom rather than bolting to the side of it if that makes sense?

The only way I could do it was to remove the front crash beams and remove the lower wishbones, which is right PITA of a job.

The rears are easy.

Hi aweee as symon has pointed out the mito is slightly different, yes the bolt you high lighted is the one you undo, if you drop the bottom ball joint out of the hub carrier it will give you enough clearance to lift the shock absorber out, it will save you removing the lower wish bone, it can be quite an ordeal, I have just replaced both front springs

Hi
So raise car place on axle stand,
Remove road wheel,
Undo the 2 Allen head screws securing the caliper and remove, detach brake flexi from s absorber and set caliper aside out the way.
Undo and detach anti roll bar link from shocker.
Detach abs sensor and pad warning light wire from shocker.
Undo remove lower ball joint pinch bolt, separate ball joint from hub carrier, this can be a chew.
Undo remove pinch bolt securing shocker into hub carrier, hub carrier Will now wiggle downwards and will just clear the bottom of the shocker.
Carefully separate the plastic clips that secures the shocker at the inner wing helps if you have someone to assist to support the strut assembly.
're fitment is just a reverse of the process you need to ensure you have the strut top bearing correctly positioned you will see this by lining the holes up, hopefully the pic shows this.

Thank you very much for all your help @Merv the swerve

I'm sorry but my English is not very good and some things I do not understand, I've done a kind of tutorial with photos. Can you tell me if the disassembly steps are correct?

1º Lift the car.

2º Remove the wheel of the vehicle.

3º Remove the 2 covers behind the clamp with a screwdriver,

4º loosen the 2 Allen head screws that hold the clamp and remove them

5º Remove the brake wear sensor.

6º Remove the brake from the shock absorber

7º Unscrew and disconnect the link from the anti-roll bar of the shock absorber.

8º Undo remove the pressure screw from the lower ball joint, separate the ball joint from the shock absorber support

9º Remove the fixing screw that fixes the shock absorber, the hub carrier will now move down and will only clean the lower part of the shock absorber.

10º Carefully separate the plastic clips that secure the shock absorber to the inner wing if you have someone to help you hold the shock absorber assembly.

thanks

Step 8 of the tutorial I have done.

8º Undo remove the pressure screw from the lower ball joint, separate the ball joint from the shock absorber support

One last doubt. Should it be done as in the next video?

Thank you so much for being so kind.

Great write up/How to procedure!
...This is the kind of thing we need more of in the Giulietta forum.

Maybe it can be final drafted and made a sticky at the top of the forum? I know replacing the springs is a popular job.

I have just ordered the Eibach Pro springs from Alfisti so would be interested in doing it myself.

Please continue to add photos of any other steps you notice while replacing the springs.

Thanks

Have you got the bolt loose?

If you have you might need to either seperate the wishbone from the hub at the ball joint, or lever the wishbone downwards somehow.

I removed the lower wishbone completely on mine.

The easiest way I found was to remove the lower wishbones, which also involves seperating that joint.

Probably not what you wanted to hear...

Hi you most definitely need to separate the lower ball joint, once you have done that with the pinch bolt removed using side to side wiggling it should slide down the shock absorber, it may need some release oil and gentle persuasion to get it going,

These are the two screws that I must remove also to be able to remove the shock absorber?

I'm sorry but I'm Spanish and there are some pieces of mechanics that I do not understand, besides my English is not good.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi guys,

Just a question on this part as I am about to give it a go this weekend.

Can we remove the lower ball joint and that should give just enough clearance or do we need to actually remove the wishbone as well? Some folk stated that separating the lower ball joint was enough to generate the space required.

Thank you.

Hello,

I think you have solved all my doubts, next month that I will have more time I will set them up. I hope not to get stuck with anything.

With some piece I have to take special care when disassembling?

I can not find the tightening torques of each screw. Do you know where I can find them?

Thank you very much

I didn't do that step on mine, as before seperating the ball joint i removed the lower wishbone bolts from the subframe and took the arm out in one go.

I did mention above I think that it cannot easily be done without removing the wishbone.

there is a wishbone removal guide on the Alfa workshop page.

To me, looking at the image it looks like the ball joint is released already.

There isn't enough movement downwards in the lower arm before it hits the subframe to allow the ball joint to come out completely.

Either you will have to compress the spring significantly and push the bottom the shocker up to effectively shorten the strut or remove the arm.

@aweee

Ok, no problem. There is a link here on how to remove the crash beams. https://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_giulietta_front_wishbone_change.shtml

Firstly, you do not need to remove the front bumper in the video.

In the picture i have attached, you can see the inner wheel arch guard has been removed.
1) Next, you need to remove the bolt I have circled with 1 beside it, then remove the guard. There may be another bolt holding this guard in i cannot remember.
2) You will then be able to see the silver crash beam. I have drawn the crash beam with the number 2 in the photo.

Now just follow from step 8.

I hope this helps.
