Giulia Petrol - Oil Service mileage question

Fellow Alfa owners and mechanic friends, I have my Veloce booked in for its (first) 9K service on the 8th November which is when its convenient for me with my work schedule. It now looks like I am going to be hitting 10K by the time I get to the service date, can anyone forsee any issues with going 10% over the specified mileage for the oil change? I am guessing not as I can't see oil deteriorating that rapidly over the course of a 1000 miles, which I will be doing over the next three weeks but just curious if anyone has any thoughts.

Cheers

Oil change is usually either 9k, 1 year or if the oil change warning comes up in the dash. The 2.0 has an Oil quality sensor which will flag up when deterioration is detected. Even with that, you can drive for a few hundred miles. I was in the same position at second service and was about 800 miles late without issue. This was with the "Change engine oil" warning on. Keep an eye on the oil level and keep it topped up and you should be fine.

18k service

Had my car serviced yesterday first thing I checked was the oil level when I got it back sat with engine running for 5min or a little longer checked oil level 3/4 full after a pantomime visit at the last service Tec forgot to complete service which included not topping oil up. So before I headed home went back in to the service desk and said that the oil level was still showing at the same level before service and the paper work said they had topped the oil. Guy took the car away returning 10min later saying that they had put oil in but the engine would have to be running at temprature before the gauge reset its self to the proper reading still no change 3/4 still showing is this the case or Service guy Bull!!.

@carnut4760. I am finding it a bit hard to understand your question as it is all one sentence! lol. If you are wondering if the oil and filter were changed, the oil level indicator is not a gauge for determining if this was done especially if there was correct level of oil (between the low and high mark on the service menu display). The oil level display shows minimum and max like a virtual dipstick. So 1/4 level means oil is at minimum dipstick level and 3/4 means at max dipstick level. It is quite normal for the indicator to show 3/4 both before (assuming no oil loss over the 9k miles) and after an oil change if the correct quantity of oil has been put in at each service. Compared to the first 2 years/18k miles my 2.0 engine seems to have used slightly more oil now approaching 27k miles and oil level has dropped closer to the 1/2 way mark on the indicator.

One way to check if oil was changed is to open the oil filler cap and see if you can see fresh oil coating on the surface. Old oil should be slightly darker.

Cheers for reply, I am just working out my service will actually be around the 11K mark so actually quite a way out but can’t be helped due to work and personal commitments, lots of motorway miles coming up. Also, I refuse to take it to Mangoletsi in the mean time so waiting till I’m working in Surrey in November to take it back to dealer I purchased it from.

Can you post a picture of the oil level? Max is @ 3/4 level, unless the 3/4 you are describing is lower.

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll join in with this, my car is a year old 13 Nov. I too have had the Oil Service/Change message come up, as well as Service Due.

I have the Service Plan, but have declined Mangoletsi's invitation as they are too far away, so the car is booked in with Johnson's in Swindon. Whilst booking it, I was asked if I wanted the engine flushed (I thought this was part of the process - apparently not), that will an extra £39 Sir.

Anyone else come across this and should I get it flushed?

The "engine flush" they are referring is likely using a separate flushing agent which acts like a detergent, after they drain the old oil, followed by filling/running engine/draining the flushing agent, then refill with new oil. So an extra cost of £39 seems standard. However, modern synthetic engine oils have good cleaning capabilities so there is no need for this extra step. I maybe wrong but I would also not want to mess up the Multiair system using unapproved flushing fluids! My advice is pass on it.

I see what you mean. Oil level does look fine though. Its between min and max. It is quite normal for the level to drop slightly from when they filled it depending on how much they put in and how long they let it settle before a final top-up. Nothing of concern as long as you can see fresh oil through the oil filler cap.

As jwq said above, it's better to fill slightly under max. I dont see any problems here.

After a bit of careful consideration decided to bring the service forward to this Friday at Mangoletsi instead of waiting until November :paperbag: Hope I dont regret it.

2.0 petrol does not have a dipstick. Only the 2.9.

Diesel dipstick is not user friendly but still better than not having one.

I would think Mangoletsi would be ok for a routine service.

I'll ask the question in the morning when I drop the car off. Not ideal leaving it this long but unexpected work commitments left me little choice unfortunately.

I topped up a half litre when my warming light came on. The recommended oil came from a Fiat dealer (ten a penny). For fear of over filling I'd not put more than half a litre in before running for 5 mins to check the new level.

Personally I'd have gladly paid another £10 for a proper dipstick to be fitted [emoji35]

Oil is cheap compared to engines.

Must admit I do wonder how accurate the level sensor is? I've 2.2JTDM and the level was below the top mark so I got the right brand of oil and started to slowly top up the engine. I put 1/2 a litre and no change on the display. All my old cars would go from the bottom of the dipstick to the top level with a half litre. Is the sump particularly wide or should I add more oil?

The FCA extended warranty allows you to go over by 1,000 miles or 4 weeks. I think the manufacturer warranty is the same but can't find it right now.
As for oil level, in the middle or 3/4 is what is be aiming for. I wouldn't want it to be less and you're risking over fill if you aim for more. Not sure why people think it's supposed to be at the maximum. You'd never have done that with an actual dipstick.

I would go to the top of a dipstick, most engines consume some oil and if you go to maximum before a long trip it should give you enough oil in reserve without having to refill. My Italian holidays usually put 3000 miles on the car each year, to be fair it is easier to get all the right fluids in an Italian hypermarket. I've never seen Paraflu in Tesco they sell it in Conad in Fermo!!
