alfas 2.2 Diesel engine.

A friend told me yesterday this engine is shared with the Mercedes engine as they both have the same cc 2143. Is this correct as i thought alfa made their own engines?

It's possible the Alfa engine MAY be a derivative of the Merc engine but they are certainly not the same. There are significant differences, at least according to Wikipedia.

No, the equal displacement is sheer coincidence, and that MB engine was replaced some time ago with an entirely new, and vastly improved, diesel that's just under 2 litres. The old MB diesel had an iron block, but the new one is all aluminium, just like the Alfa 2.2, and the AR one is really rather good.

I've owned both of the Mercedes engines, the old 220D diesel was pretty unsophisticated by today's standards, not too smooth especially at idle and low revs, though it was much better in the higher output 250D one.

Zero relationship between the MB and the AR engines. Not shared, not a derivative.

Thanks , i was thinking it was only the Alfas that was all alloy and that the Mercs block was steel.

As much as I love my Veloce, the 2.2d engine in my previous Speciale was terrific.

I know itís unfashionable to say, but itís a great engine. Iím just glad Iím doing fewer miles polluting the world with diesel nastiness than when I was commuting. The Stelvio really flies with the 210 and itís torque.
