Thatís a mess.

Did the aux belt let go first and take out the timing belt? Thatís the first timing belt Iíve actually seen snapped - normally they get shredded.

AUX belt seems to have shredded and then decided to take timing belt with it..

Yeouch, wonder how that happened? I thought the whole idea of the cambelt covers, aside from stopping you introducing random things (screwdrivers, spanners, your fingers) to the timing belt, was to stop that sort of damage.

I would imagine that the bits whipping about the crank pulley are the killers - once a bit get into the timing belt, the rest will get sucked in rather quickly.

Well RX speaking fray (get it) experience ken.....All of mine snapped like that The Vauxhall Victor FD (My very first at 98k) in1979 Ford orion x3 (All same car ) each just over 30k each time Pomeo 78k and TIa cannae recall mileage

Me and my grandson play find the snake wie TIa's old belt. Had years of fun wie it. It's getting very hard for me to play hide and seek now aching joints etc etc etc. and look mare like an ostrich wie its heed unner the san but the 166 timing belt with the snapping looks like a snake makes an ideal subbie. PS NB I loved was it the Leeds Managers guesture pitthe full back wisnae on side

I couldnae unnerstawn how the Aux belt going could take oot the timing belt but looking at John's pics....I reckon the belt stops the crankshaft and the momentum in the timing system takes up the slack oan thon Canadian tensioner and as Anne Robinson used tay say goes ping at the weakest link .

Just like the singer and the little bitty tear I ken this wee hiccup wont get you down John.

Main problem is that there is so many things that needs to be removed and some of them are putting up quite a fight!

But, I do find other small stuff that I take care of while I am at it. Like new flex tubes on the exhaust.

I was thinking the same - maybe some signs of contact on one exhaust valve but the pistons look OK...

If the other side looks as good you might have got away with just needing a top end rebuild rather than needing to tear down the bottom end to check the bearings

Second head is the exact same, both heads are handed over to a specialist. He starts looking at them friday..

It seems to me that I at least got a little lucky, even though the amount of hours going into it is quite insane

Seems like you have been lucky with that cambelt snap, if you can ever be lucky with a cambelt snap that is

The amount of time I'm spending on my Busso rebuild is quite insane too, but for a different reason. The engine was just fine, but it's been standing for so many years it's more like an archaeological dig than a rebuild

Probably, but it's an interesting challenge and a good excuse to totally strip a Busso, and the entire block cost less than a full set of gaskets so even if it never runs again I haven't lost much. Besides, I don't have any time constraints - the car it's going into hasn't even arrived yet

Totally understand what you are saying, as the owner of a Fiat Uno Turbo project that has not been on the road for 10 years, I do know the feeling of "just because you can and if I was sane, I would have chosen something else" ;-)

Such a shame but hang in there and itíll be better than ever.

A friendly advice after reading through too many of these rebuild threads is that the cam followers can get damaged when the belt snapped and can make a rebuild costly if they go bang after the engine has been rebuilt......

It seems that there is so little damage, that nothing but a few valves will need replacing, but I am of course replacing alot of other goodies.

Water pump seems to be needed as well...

I am also replacing climate compressor, power steering pump and alternator, as I have almost new ones from the old car.
