I part ex my 156 for a 159 sportwagon Ti 09 plate last aug .
Since then I have taken it back on 4 occasions complaining about the quality of the gear change in 2 nd & 3 rd & on every time they have told me there is nothing wrong.
I always feel that the gear change is very notchy and not smooth especially going in to 3rd .When the car is cold it is much worse.
Does anyone else have the same problems or know of a cure as I am on the verge of selling it .
You dont say what engine you have but It might have the wrong gear oil in it, they are speced with GL4 oil but most general purpose fully synthetic oil is gl5 spec which is too slippery for the syncros to work properly resulting in a notchy change.
I changed to redline mt90 gl4 and its made a huge improvement to the gear change quality
Thanks for reply ,It's the 1.9 desiel engine. As I had the 159 from an official Alfa dealer they put a 2year service on it and stamped the book so the oil should be ok ?
alfa's line on gearbox oil is it's in for life. Quiet a common gripe by all accounts. I have 3 litres of redline gearbox oil waiting to go in my 159 when i get the chance.
I have the 2.0 jtdm which I believe has a different gearbox but I find third very notch when cold. Other gears are ok but it's definitely not what you would call a slick gearbox.
I also have a 2.0 (59) and have found the gear changes not as smooth as I had imagined and was thinking the linkages? Cold doesn't really make much difference ;-/ So would the general consensus say its more than likely gearbox oil?
I changed the gear cable and it improved a lot, more then the oil change...
