It could be. You can give a try and check it out. Here in this forum you can find a lot of tutorial about removing, cleaning and testing the EGR

Mines a 2.4 so I can't say if you've got the same problem but i just got myself a little 1/4" ratchet and a 10mm socket. Didn't need a deep one. On my engine it helps to unbolt the coolant header tank too. No probs took 45 mins from start to finish.

Engine still has a cough at about 2000 rpm though. :0(

on the 1.9 i found the best way is to slacken off the 2 x 13mm (i think they were 13mm???) which attached to the connecting pipe. Then undo the 4 x 10mm which hold the egr in place. I didnt have any stuck bolts when i did mine so not sure which bolts are stuck sarg.

I hope that helps.

I also have some problem with my 2.4. did send an e-mail to Pierburg regarding replacement of EGR every year.
The answe that I recieved was:
Generally spoken it is proven that a malfunction of the EGR valve is often caused by other damages in the engine's surrounding. But this needs to be diagnosed and checked by a well equipped workshop.
I also recieved a document regarding EGR and error but it is in Swedish and to big for uploading.

Hi there,
I have the same car & engine and experiencing same problem you got. So I consider buying a new one (in price is right). Did your ebay seller have only the egr valve you got, or sells more? (please provide link in latter case!)
regards,
Paris

Hi Paris
I just searched for 'alfa 159 egr' and the first one that came up I 'watched' and started bidding for. As it happened, it was from a 159 and had done some miles. In good condition and very clean.
I got it for £34!!! very pleased, as i fitted it myself and it's working very well indeed!
I understand that the EGR is the same on some vauxhall, so the item I won was actually 'Alfa/Vauxhall EGR Valve'
Have a browse around, but make sure it will fit your car before bidding...

Check there are no leaks, try blanking the EGR with a piece of a thin metal, will show if it is the EGR, also check for leaks

sounds like you could have a vacuum issue and your turbo isn't kicking in, does your turbo gauge go up like normal or stay down low?

Vacuum tank (not pump) is just below the EGR valve, check you haven't knocked one of the thin rubber vacuum lines off

If you look just below and slightly to the side (inner side) of the EGR you should see two very thin rubber hoses that link onto sets of nipples. That's the vacuum tank, could be that one of the hoses has been knocked off or split, that would result in your turbo not kicking in properly. I only know this as it happened to me months ago.
