Fault code reader

Morning fellow Alfisti

What ODB2 readers are you guys using? I know you can probably get the Fiat software by scouring the net, but I知 massively paranoid about malware (nothing is free, right?)

Seen a few readers listed on eBay ranging from 」20-90

Any good? Or better still, any recommendations??

Are you after software or hardware? If it's software you want the paid version of MES or AlfaOBD (my choice)....although I also have Torque Pro on my phone and a cheap Bluetooth Obd plug always in my door pocket...always useful for checking deleting anything that pops up on the road and much faster and simpler than the above.
If you mean hardware you need a good quality obd2 plug..either BT or wired...and a set of modified adapter leads if you want to access ECUs other the the engine one. Cheap on eBay. I run mine though my phone (Android works better with these programs than Apple I find). A basic code reader will usually only find powertrain codes...not much help if you have ABS or airbag issues. And a reasonable code reader will be lots more expensive than the cost to purchase the plug and program.....and MES or AlfaOBD can be used toprogram new keys etc which a code reader can't.

Appreciate this and will most likely buy alfaODB

Which BT obd2 plug did you go with? An elm327??

If so, could you share a link (already seen on the alfaODB page that some of these might not work, so want to buy one that does)

Be carful with BT OBD readers from Ebay, I had two that didn't work and in the end bought a Panlong Mini OBD 11 It was dearer about 」16 I think.
I leave it plugged in all the time It's not active with ignition off so no power drain like some apparently, I then use Dash Command on my phone and interestly when I had fault code P0013 the diagnostic wording was exactly the same as on LC Motors ***** specialist diagnostic machine, but as said only limited stuff on the portable mini OBD I only have it to give me an idear what the problem maybe but it does clear the codes no problem

My son in law has a VW Caddy van which showed an ABS code.

I値l have a look at it I said, we値l check the wiring, the sensor and the reluctor, it may be dirt or a broken wire.

No, no, no, we値l need a code reader he says. A VW ABS code reader for 」89.

It showed a faulty with the front nearside wheel, great.

The sensor had come out of its socket, I think I could have found that without a code reader.

I had a cheal ELM327 adapter
VIECAR its called i believe

Originally it could only access the engine ECU.

However there is a 100Ohm bridging resist between CanHI and CanLow that needs to be removed for most of the chinese ELM327 adapters.
After that I could acces all the modules that don't need a specific adapter. For XENON and TPMS you would still need an adapter because they run on separate CAN busses, which do not comply to the default OBDII port pinout.

MultiEcuScan and correct ELM327 cables set from Gendan products in Swansea. It's made for Alfa. Could not recommend it more. No soldering 100 ohm resistors... Beware the free downloads and cheap cables. (Tried that.) The full set of cables does everything you need. I got this posted to the other side of the world and it was well worth it. Not your cheapest option of course, but you knew that already.

Make up your mind about what exactly you want from the system. Just reset your service light when doing your own service? Doing diagnostics when the car fails or a light comes on?

I use it more often, when I hear something I don't like. When something doesn't behave as expected. I read out errors every once in a while (maybe every month). Some keep returning (something with the stereo and the rear door speakers, haven't had any interest in sorting it out) but all in all the car has a clean bill of health and I like to keep it that way.

I went for Bluetooth with AlfaOBD since I always carry my phone, and have the reader in the car at all times. Saved me once or twice whilst on holidays.
Also useful for me when I upgrade to an android stereo with app support.

Also I don't have a laptop so that would make the USB option a little more useless for me.
I don't have any adapter cables since I don't have TPMS and I doubt there is much diagnostics to be done on my xenon lights that I would or could fix myself.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys

I致e opted to try alfaODB and bought a nexus to specifically run the app, and gone for the panlong BT OBD plug, following the suggestions

Interestingly, my mate brought his nexus and rand the trial of AlfaOBD which threw up these error codes

Many could be old. Clear them off and take it for a drive then re-scan Any that re-occur are "real" faults!
