Can't remember where I'd heard it, but supposedly the 159's used in the film were 1.9 diesels if I recall, and the nice petrol engine sounds were dubbed over.

It was the 'Limited Edition' based on this James Bond film car that was only available as a DERV.

One of the drivers was also killed during the filming of the scene. There is also a picture on the Web I have seen that looks like a quarry with row upon row of smashed 159's used to create it.

Yeah, I've seen them, but distinctly remember reading that the engine sounds were dubbed, perhaps I've misread/misremembered

Most films they dub in the engine sounds apparently......even if it's with the same engine...apparently engine sounds don't records too well outside especially from any sort of distance...modern cars are pretty quiet when outside.

Yes! Its a bit of a chuckle when the car in the film is (as we know) a 4 cylinder but the soundtrack is US V8!

Knowing that those chase scenes are made out of dozens of different shots, filmed by various cameras at different distances, it is just impossible to get a "real" and "genuine" engine sound onto the final movie. You would also hear more of the the sound of the car or helicopter that is filming the scene, than the real engine sound. Such a Hollywood movie does not try to reproduce reality, just be "awsome".

I know that was the case in the last Brosnan bond film, that ridiculous disappearing Aston was powered by a ford V8, not a nice V12.

Guys, modern road cars are absurdly quiet; I was at the Indianapolis 500 in May and I kid you not, you couldn't hear the engine of the pace car (a supposedly loud & dirty American V8 launched at near full song) even when it was lapping on its own before the race. All you heard was tire rolling noise. By comparison, the race cars caused the whole grandstands to shake by just blipping the throttle

There's no way engine sounds in movies ain't dubbed...and they're often dubbed with the wrong one (they do that for airplanes as well, but you won't notice the mismatching sound unless you're an aviation nut ). At least they redubbed the GTV6 with a proper Busso sound in Octopussy

I don't think you even need to be an aviation nut - I caught the tail end of some dross my mam was watching at the weekend, and someone was on a private plane which was halted taxing to the runway for some last gasp declaration of love - to the sounds of jet engines spooling down - and it was clearly a propeller-driven plane.

I'm not saying that engine sounds on films aren't dubbed, just that I'd heard the cars used on that bond film were diesels, and the V6 sounds were dubbed over - obviously that's not the case.

Posting from my phone - excuse spelling mistakes

There was an article on here somewhere about that, saying that on the road yes, they would struggle (the excuse was the traffic would be the limiting factor) , but in the quarry, their 4x4 system easily helped them keep up.
Will see if I can find it
Edit: here you go!

"Re. QOS obviously an Aston DBS should leave an Alfa behind but they were the 4WD 3.2V6 manuals and on that particular wet badly surfaced road with traffic they would have had a good chance of keeping close.

When in the quarry the Aston couldn't get away during filming.

Remember it's all fiction anyway though and the Astons and Alfas were totally messed with anyway.

All the cars were strengthened, hydraulic handbrakes put in etc and then different ones had the tyres swapped back to front/traction control and ABS disengaged/rear suspension raised etc to make them handle differently.

DC was in a a cut down half car on a hydraulic ram etc "

This was in response to someone criticizing the film for having us believe that a DBS couldn't outrun an Alfa.

If I had a 4wd 3.2v6 159 I'd be pretty happy with that post!

I thought the 159/DBS chase scenes were in Casino Royale, not Quantum of Solace? Still remember being blown away by the DBS at the time!
