Air con - odd "grinding" noise

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but another item on the snag list of my new 159tbi sportwagon. When the air con is engaged, there is an odd hollow grinding noise that changes in pitch as the engine revs. It isn't present when the air con is switched off, so I'm worried the compressor has given up the ghost. It still seems to blow reasonably cold when on however. Is this something as straightforward as needing a service and re-gas, or is it likely that the compressor has developed a problem?
Thanks in advance for any tips!

I had a sort of scraping noise when the air con was engaged, I donít remember if it changed in pitch with revs, but a regas sorted it.

Thanks both, that sounds promising. Fingers crossed a simple regas will sort my issue out too. Will get it booked in to local Kwikfit for an air con service.

Air con - odd "grinding" noise

Yeh low refrigerant could do it, Iíve been advised mine is due to a noisey pulley wheel on the aux belt (weird that it is only really noticeable when the AC is being pushed though) ! Not worth changing until I get the cam belt done

Not sure it was the noisy pulley after all, the compressor died sometime over the winter!

Just to report back, refrigerant refresh made no difference. Noise as bad as ever. Suspect it is the A/C clutch as per the thread referenced above. Beyond my DIY skills unfortunately so will just put up with it until I can get it to a specialist. Still blows cold, so not the end of the world!
