So clearly I'm an Alfa nut having bid on and won a selespeed (eeek) sportwagon. So it's goodbye to my saloon. I normally buy blind but because of the selespeed I test drove it and it was perfect. The car has only done 40k and had 1 previous owner (2001 model). Throughout it's life it's had some years of hardly any use, the past 12 months it's done very few miles.

I expect the selespeed will cost me money over the next 12 months, I have a stamped history but few bills. My question is what should I prioritise with the box, do things go wrong if it's been stood for a while? Is maintenance as simple as an oil change. When I collect on Monday I'm sure any problems that exist will present themselves but if they don't I'd like to make sure everything is looked after from the outset.

Any other selespeed tips are greatly appreciated and if there are any experts out there it would be good to know.

thanks!

Sell it as fast as possible in order not to contribute loads of duplicate posts about sele faults. i.e ive pulled into a filling station now my car wont start in neutral or im on the motorway in 5th gear and my car drops into neutral. Why is my sele fluid going down into the gearbox, how come i get loads of beeps when driving .............. They stopped making them nearly 10 years ago it probably did more damage to the Alfa name than Jeremy clarkeson !

Remember that the Selespeed is just a normal manual box with hydraulic selector mechanisms, controlled by electronics. Box unlikely to have any problems unless the clutch adjustment has been allowed to get out of range and the hydraulics have been bashing the gears in. Faults are usually down to either a failing battery - they really like a good condition battery ;), a worn hydraulic pump (meaning the bushes make intermittent contact - usually when its been running for a few minutes), or bad electrical contacts - particularly on the pump relay contacts.

I've had some bad experiences with Seles myself - but when they are right they are great, although getting the best out of them takes a little experience.

Enjoy!(and if you need Smaky, and are an AROC member - he pops up on the forum there, too!)
