Help Sooty Exhaust

My Alfa 156 2.0 TS 1999 seems to be running rich, I've noticed that the exhaust tailpipe coulur has gone a slighty black sooty colour, the cars runs fine but I have a slight concern with the exhaust colour in the tailpipe.

Not sure if the MAFF sensor would cause this problem, any help would be most welcome.

Cheers

I would be interested at any reply to this as mine is the same, although it does not burn any oil at all and runs pretty good

Re: Sooty Exhaust

I don't see a problem. I'd expect the inside of any exhaust to be black and sooty. Hope I'm not wrong, all my cars have been the same

That's because the soot is caused by performance pixies, so us people with higher performance cars (and therefore more pixies) get more soot.

Re: Sooty Exhaust

I think the 2.0 TS engines just do this - especially if you do a lot of stop/start driving. I get this after short journeys, even if I keep it well below 3k rpm before hot. A chrome exhaust can look pretty gunky pretty quickly. I often see sports cars with sooty exhausts - probably a lead foot at work!

If it isn't particularly oily, it is probably just unburnt HC when cold (engine running rich). When did you last have an emissions check?

Re: Sooty Exhaust

I wouldn't worry for the 18 months I had my 2.0Ts before getting the torque monster it was exactly the same, didn't matter whether it was a short journey around town or the long run back down to here in Blandford from Coventry.

Have you had the car long, i.e. is the sooty exhaust a very recent thing? Or might you just not have noticed before? If it has happened only in the months since the emissions check, maybe it is time to get the car checked over (could be MAF as you suggested, dirty injectors etc. etc. - you'd really need to ask a mechanic).

Re: Sooty Exhaust

Had the car about 2 years now, in that time its had just about a new everything including MAF. Always had a sooty exhaust though, both my new and my old exhaust got sooty.

Does anyone know how much it is to have your injectors cleaned properly.

My Alfa 156 2.0 SW has got this soot problem, seems to be getting worse though, smells to rich and burning lots of oil, problem seems to be since oil change 3 weeks ago. drives fine?? does have lag in 2nd and makes that tapping sound at 2000 rpm and then 3000.

looked up lots of things, some seem like big jobs and some say its just an Alfa,????

I love my SW, please help.
